Heather that place is gorgeous
Heather: I went there right before my wedding. I love that place. We actually have a family reunion there in July this year and are thinking about staying there.

Christmas Eve, 1999
On my mother's side of the family, about 14 of us aunts, uncles and cousins do Secret Santa where we pick names and buy a nice gift for just that one person to save money. Patrick had picked my name (at first he thought, oh that's great, now I have to get her an extra gift) but he decided that it was his big chance. It's Christmas Eve night, and we're about to pick names to determine who gets to give when, when Pat askes my uncle if it's ok if he goes last. I was only suspicious that it was going to be some sort of joke on someone (he's always joking around) and he wanted it to be dramatic. I had no idea what was coming. By the end I figured out that he had me, and he hands me a shirt box to prevent suspicion. Inside are five boxes (getting smaller and smaller) all wrapped within each other, to build the drama as I was opening them. Everyone was laughing until I got to the tiny box when it got very quiet. I opened the box, saw the ring, turned to my right and he was down on one knee. Since my mom was prepared, we have some nice pictures. It was thoughtful of Pat to do it that way b/c he knows how important my family and that particular holiday are to me. I'm so enjoying everyone else's stories. This was a good idea!

Mohonk Mountain House!!
May I ask where Mohonk Mountain House is? I am from the Philadelphia area so I have never heard of it. It sounds like a wonderful place to go relax.

Mohonk Mountain House!!
I loved it there it is like the hotel from The Shining, without all the scarry people. The even put in a maze of bushes. It is so beautiful there, they have gazebos everywhere. I am sure I love it because we got engaged there but it is really a special place. If you want a romantic getaway it is the place to go

LaurenS's story
David and I have been dating for 4 and a half years. We new that we would get engaged eventually, but I wanted to be surprised and David felt the same way. We never looked at rings together and I had always trusted his taste in the past, so I was fine with not picking it out myself. He kept telling me for my birthday instead of a present he wanted to go away for the weekend. So I was totally thinking that the ring would come this weekend. Well, on March 9th, I come home to Long Island from work (which is unusual b/c generally on a Friday I stay with him in NYC) and I open the door to my bedroom and David is standing there in a tuxedo with about 100 candles all over my room and rose petal and roses all over. After I screamed and calmed down from the shock, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Then after our families were waiting for us at a restaurant to celebrate. So there was no trip planned and instead we spent the weekend of my birthday looking at places to get married. I couldn't have been happier!

time for my story (long)
After four years of dating two of which we spent living together Stephen popped the question 2 weeks before my 27th birthday. We were out at a very nice resturant and all of a sudden he pulled the ring box out of his pocket. I started crying and everyone in the resturant began to stare because they thought he was breaking up with him. Next think you know he was down on one knee and asking me to marry him. The whole resturant started clapping and I continued to cry but managed to say yes.All his brothers and sisters and my mom were in the bar of the resturant waiting to hear my answer. As if they did not already know. I did not pick the ring out with him but I made him promise that he would at least go with one of his 5 sisters to pick it out. To my surprise he picked it out all by himself and did a great job. Now we just wait our 2/02 wedding.

Us too on Christmas Eve, 1999
We had looked for a while & not found any type of ring either of us liked, so I figured it would be a while longer... but he got a call from the jeweler a few days before Christmas (that is the time of year we started dating, we were together 7 years at that point!!). Well he picked up the ring at 6pm that night. I had family who traveled from Virginia for the night & the next day & was so annoyed that he started to suggest around 10:00 ( I had only gotten home from work at 8) that we go see the decorations in the village, which traditionally he & I have done on Christmas nite), yet I was not suspitious!! Well I finally agreed to go about 11:30 & he asked me in front of the giant tree in the village!!! As it turns out, he wanted to ask me that nite so my family from out of town could see the ring!! Very sweet!!!

ME too on Christmas Eve, 1999
My boo proposed in front of my entire family at 12:00 am Christmas Day. Picture it 50 Aunts and Uncles, 35 first cousins 20 family friends and of course mom and dad. He cried more than I did!!!!

My romantic proprosal..Ha Ha
Okay one more story..I had just quit my job, and was very stressed because I didn't have another one. My fiance had already told me that he really didn't want to have a long engagement and since my son still had 1 1/2 years of high school (meaning we had to wait at least that long)I was not expecting anything for a while. I was not happy about that because I really wanted the commitment from him. Well about a week after I quit my job we went to Sports Authority so I could get a pair of sneakers. My fiance bought them for me and I jokingly said I wished it was as easy to get a ring out of him as it was a pair of sneakers. We got back in his truck and he asked me to get him something out of the glove compartment. I opened it and there was a jewelry box with my beautiful ring inside. I was totally surprised. There we were in the middle of the Sports Authority parking lot in Sayville on Tuesday morning..Talk about romance. Well it wasn't the most romantic proprosal but it was certainly different!!!

Wendy - mine too!
Hi Wendy; I'm so glad to finally read another proposal that was spontaneous and not the fairy tale romance. I was beginning to feel like I was the only one who's fiance didn't go to great lengths! (see A casual proposal... above). None the less, it was still special in it's own way - just like yours.

My best friend is from Cherry Hill! Went to Cherry Hill East i think. How did you end up on Long Island?
LIWeddings Archive Posted: Apr 06, 2001 08:08 PM+
Karen-- I read yours :-)
I don't think my fiance ever actually asked me to marry him. It was sort of ..here is the ring..so I guess we're getting married. It actually was funny. I won't ever forget it though. And like your fiance, he isn't the hearts and flowers type, but he is rock solid and always there when I need him. I know how very lucky I am.Welcome New Vendors
