i thought certain ISP's provide dynamic IP's, no?
so they say
take optimum as an example.
they say they have dynamic IP addresses but they never change. there are also some other secrets used to detect the same users that I can not say.
yeah, optimum... i was under the impression that one could not host a site due to changing IP addresses (and the fact that they just wouldn't want users doing this for free) thus i never even made the attempt...

optimum blocks port 80 so you can't host a site. when you set up your connection with them (for your home computer) you are assigned an IP. they call it dynamic because it can change except they set the lease for 99 years. (lease is the time the IP expires and you dynamically get a new one)

And to think I clicked on this to see if you were talking about people with fake sounding names that sound like soap opera stars or book characters.

They block incoming 80? That suks! I did not know that. I wonder if TWC does this with Roadrunner. Might have to test to find out.

Oh.. and you can still host a website (if they dont block 80)... even if your IP address changes on a daily basis. You just need to run a DDNS host.

I once hosted an image website on Optimum. Go into your IIS settings and change the port of your website from 80 to something else. That's it. (you just have to remember to put the port # after your ip address when accessing your site)
Oh and Ron is right, my IP address never has changed on Optimum. Dynamic my butt!

Re: Fake Names
DMAG:Oh definitely can do that. But changing the port really only works if you are hosting stuff for your own use. If you wanted to host a website for the public to see... they won't be able to access it without knowing the port number. But I am sure you already know that.
Hey Ron... does Optimum block 443 as well?

Hmmm blocking the good ole SSL port. Don't know never tried. You also can not map a drive or admin SQL. Unless you use a VPN.

?
Domain Forwarding works around that little problem! Add the port # into your forwarder. Works like a charm.

Re: Fake Names
I use DynDns.org. They have something called Web Hopping that gets around the issue of hosting something on port 80 or 443 that I've used for several clients. I found nothing on the OOL that mentions whether port 443 is blocked or not.Welcome New Vendors
