So my FH and I are in a disagreement of me changing my name! So I would like to hypenate it with Kimberly (my madien name - his last name) please tell me what you think, be HONEST.
Do you believe that it is not really marriage with out the name change? Do you think people who do not drop their name are scared of commitment? Do you believe you can keep you name and still have a good marriage?

I'm going to change to his name... i'll be going from the least common last name to one of the most common ones! I'm excited about it! I will have to change my name on my degree though... i'll be getting my doctor of pharmacy degree and my pharmacy lisence 3 months before the wedding... I actually never looked into how to change that! Maybe I'll leave them alone??
I'm getting my doctor of pharmacy degree this May!!!!! yay pharmacists!
Yay! And both Westbury Manor girls!
You're so lucky you're done in May! I can't wait to be done, i'm so sick of all the studying!

Thats what I keep hearing! I tried to arrange my rotation schedule so that I could be home alot to work on wedding plans... hoping I'm not too busy with school!
Sorry to have changed the topic on the thread, lol... but I think that name change doesn't make the marriage stronger... call me a romantic, but I think love is all you need!

I'm changing it just because I always thought I would, and besides, my last name is like a first name and I am sick of correcting people!

I'm changing mine, I'd rather not because FH's last name is irish and there is an apostrophe in it! I'm not so happy about that but FH said if I take his last name we can raise the kids jewish so I thought it was a fair deal.

I do not believe that not changing your name indicates fear of committment, disrespect, or a bad marriage at all. I can see how it could affect FH or his family but then again if you come from a family who loves you and is supportive of you, i can understand hyphenating completely or keeping your name.. i am not i saying that if you dont keep your name that your family dosent love you or vice versa, its just personal beliefs. i am changing my name because every time i hear it i feel angry and shameful(bad father memories) but if that were not the case i would probably hyphenate until i had children. I definitely want the same name as my children.

Personally, I am changing it, I'm more traditional. I do not like Hyphenating. Too much to write. Everyone I know that hyphens their name usually loses their maiden name anyway. I'm excited about the name change. I'm tired of correcting people on how to pronounce my first and last name.

I actually can't wait to change my name....It makes it feel more real you know? I will miss having an Irish last name, but my freckles give it away anyway!

Re: FH and I are in a disagreement (name change)
My FH said that he would be very insulted if I didn't change my name. I don't think a name determines the strength of a marriage... it's JUST a name. However, I work with a woman who hyphenates, and she says it's such a PITA in so many different ways!
Good luck!!

i think everyone is different. but i know what you mean about the name change being hard.
DH and i had this discussion MANY MANY times. i wanted to keep my maiden name or just hyphenate it, and he was just NOT having it. ultimately he told me it was my decision, but he would LIKE me to change.
this week i will be heading to DMV for the name change. in the end, i decided i should change my name..only because he really doesn't ask me for much...but this was VERY important to him.

No...no...yes
I had a talk with FH about this too and we disagree as well. I think it's unnecessary for you to change your name in order to have a 'complete' marriage. I always thought it was unfair (at least in my culture) that women are married off into someone else's family and that after they're married they're not seen as part of their own family anymore. I guess keeping my name would make me feel like a rebel
In the end, though, I'm changing my name to his because I know how much it would hurt him...but I don't think I'll change it at work. If you do that, does it scr*w up the paperwork somehow?

My FH thought it would be a half-hearted thing if I got my name hyphenated...he would be insulted..so i'm going all the way...I wouldn't want to start my marriage off on a bad foot..

Re: FH and I are in a disagreement (name change)
Personally, I do not want to change my name. For years I was in publishing and my name is all over the place as it is now.
However - it is not about respect. You do not show respect for someone by changing your name. You show respect for someone by the way you treat them.
Saying not changing your name is disrespectful doesn't make any sense to me. Couldn't you then argue that it is disrespectful of men to ask their wives to change their names? The guys don't have to do it - why should we?? Doing it because it is tradition and important to family is different.
That said, I am probably adding his name, no hyphen. I will have First Middle Last Last and go by First Last Last. I figure people named Anne Marie or Jamie Lynn have three names, why can't I?
Socially I will be Mrs. HisLastName, professionally I will be Ms. MaidenName, and legally I will be both!
