FMIL wearing black!

Original post by JillBride08

My FMIL wants to wear black to my wedding!
I dont know whether to be bothered by this or not. I don't think she is doing it to look 'sad or dark' in any way but I don't know if her wearing black would send the best message.
I am getting married in July, a time of the year when people wear brighter colors. My bridesmaids gowns will be aquamarine and very bright. Also my mom will be wearing a brighter summer color. I'm thinking that a black gown will look very drab in pictures where everyone else is wearing bright colors. What do you think?
Am I over reacting? Has anyone elses MIL worn a black gown to their summer wedding?

Any input you have would be appreciated.

I'll be lucky if my FMIL even shows up so I don't care what she wears. You should let your FMIL wear what she feels comfortable in, I'm sure a lot of your guests will be wearing black

I guess wont make abig deal about it. But I think that I should have mentioned how she has been a bit of a pain in my *** for quite sometime. I guess that is why I was a bit annoyed by it.

a lot of women like to wear black bc it's slimming & hides imperfections. i don't think it'll stick out as being weird or anything, even for a summer wedding. black is elegant no matter the season

My mom is wearing black i dont see anything wrong with it we are getting married memorial day weekend , so it is spring time ..... my mom feels comfortable in black and my only stipulation with my mom and FMIL is that neither wear white , off white or cream ...black can be very elegant i wouldnt worry about what anyone is wearing ... im sure everyone there will know who the bride is and you will be center of attention .

I don't think it's a big deal at all! Black is very classy, no matter time of year! I may be partial to it (I got married in July, my bM's and Mother were in black), but I think she'll look fine!! I'm sure she won't be the only one in black!! I had many people wear black to my July wedding!

My FMIL is also picking out something black. She came to me and asked me first if that was alright, I told her sure it was. The outfit she is thinking about is gorgeous. Black is very chic for a wedding. I have worn it to one myself.

MY mom found the most stunning dress in black. The dress looks like its made for her. It is classy and elegant.

I could care less what color she wears. The black is bad thing is so out dated and almost every wedding that I have gone to, I have seen almost everyone in black.

I've seem mothers wear really gorgeous dresses in black. At a wedding I just went to the mother wore black with silver sequin things and she looked so pretty. I don't think it's a big deal.

I almost always wear black to weddings. I understand what you're saying about summer wedding, but unless if it's an outdoor day wedding I think black is quite appropriate.

Re: FMIL wearing black!

my mother wore black to my wedding and my brother's and navy to my sisters aug wedding. I thought she look extremely elegant. Most of all she looked comfortable because it was what she wanted. I'm not a color person, my BMs wore deep gray and I always wear black to weddings,etc... I personally think some colors look cheesy. Black can make any 'cheap' gown look elegant.... Maybe you can suggest some bright jewelry or a hot pink shawl or turquiose corsage as a compromise

Definitely don't be bothered by that. Black is probably the most worn color at any wedding. Like other people said would you rather her wear white...ala Monster in Law!!!! If my mom or FMIL found a beautiful black dress to wear to my wedding I'd be happy....I mean my BM's are even wearing black lol!!!!!

If there were underlying tensions with FMIL, I'd perhaps have pause. Your OP didn't say there were, so in this case it seems like a cigar is just a cigar. ITA with the posters above.
