FMIL wearing black!

Original post by JillBride08

My FMIL wants to wear black to my wedding!
I dont know whether to be bothered by this or not. I don't think she is doing it to look 'sad or dark' in any way but I don't know if her wearing black would send the best message.
I am getting married in July, a time of the year when people wear brighter colors. My bridesmaids gowns will be aquamarine and very bright. Also my mom will be wearing a brighter summer color. I'm thinking that a black gown will look very drab in pictures where everyone else is wearing bright colors. What do you think?
Am I over reacting? Has anyone elses MIL worn a black gown to their summer wedding?

Any input you have would be appreciated.

My MIL did wear black and honestly I saw no problem with it. For her it was the most flattering color for her and I think she looked great in it!

1/2 the time your entire wedding guests are in black. It means nothing.

I think the whole black = mourning/sorrow thing is so old school.. I know that if I went to a wedding where either mother was wearing black, I wouldn't think twice about it.

I agree. My MIL wore a black & silver dress. She looked nice & nobody had anything to say about her wearing black.

I wasn't crazy about black either, and I still feel like it's morbid to wear black to a wedding, no matter what anybody says, but my mil is a heavier set woman, and it was tough for her to find a dress that fit well and she looked and felt good in, so when she found a gorgeous dress that happened to be black (although part of it was black lace over a sort of silvery green), I sort of decided it wasn't worth the pain of continuing to shop, or the fuss, or anything... Our wedding was October, but we used a lot of bright, hot, summer colors, and it was about 80 degrees out that day... And it looked fine.

Here's a pic of her and my husband... you can see some of our wedding colors in her corsage, and it was really fine.

My mom wore black and it looked fine. IMO, it is an outdated tradition saying black represents sadness.

I love black.. It is very elegant. My mom is wearing a black gown to my black tie wedding.. I wouldn't let it bother you.

Saying that a peson wearing black is very old school

just wearing black is not a big deal.

BUT when she tells people she's wearing black because 'she's losing her little boy' - that is SO NOT COOL!!!!

most of the women at our wedding wore black. including my mom...and I didn't think she looks sad or like she was in mourning...I thought she looked really elegant.

Well my BMs are wearing black in june and my mom said that she didn't know what color she wants to wear and i'm hopeing that she picks black so that she doesn't stick out. If thats what she wants to wear i say let her go for it. If you really don't want her to wear black then go to the store with her and have her try on a bunch of colors to make sure that she really wants to wear black. HTH.

I think black is fine....maybe you can get her really bright flowers to wear on her dress or wrist. Maybe she just feels more comfy in black because she doesn't want to stand out or because it is very flattering. That is my taste though....i always think you can't go wrong with black...but I do understand that your wedding is in the summer and all....but I think it will be fine.

Black and red are no longer taboo colors for weddings.

If she is a larger lady she might just feel more comfortable in black since we all know it is a slimming color.

There will plenty of things to stress over but I don't think this is one of them.

I have a feeling my FMIL will wear black she's so self concious (and she has no reason to be btw) and she keeps telling me she can't look for a dress before she loses 20 lbs, again no need to. Regardless I dont' think I've every seen her in a color so I'm prepared and frankly don't care. I've worn black to weddings!
