For all the computer people on the board.... UPDATE

What is the best cd to use for my cd favors. I know some of them have a yellow look to them as oppsed to the silver color that the record labels use to print for their artists. Which would you say is the closest to the best that I can get as a regular joe? I know there has to be some that are better than others. Thanks a bundle

Well I have much praises to all of you for wonderful suggestions. So apparenltly I HAVE a cd on my laptop that I knew nothing about for 2 years(damn that sears salesguy ). I am listening to all the tracks off the wedding cd and so far so good. It sounds great.

I am using TDK, 700mb, 80 mins. Cd-R. I only made one cd just to listen can I use these cd's to burn all of my favors? The tag says they were made in india.

I believe the gold colored cd's are better.

The yellowish tint is the closet you can get to a real pressed CD. Some may be slightly more silver than others. A word to the wish, the best quality CDR's are the blue ones, made in Japan instead of China. They last longer, are more resistant to scratches, and have less errors when burning them.

I use Imation brand. They are silver. I think the gold ones are also of higher quality, but I don't know where to find those, I don't think they can be found in a store, prolly only online. But the ones I use they sound good for music. I also use TDK, those are good too. What really matters is what bitrate you encode the songs at. Use something high like 320kbps or VBR.

Is this a Japanese one?

I don't know....The side thet gets burned should be the blue side.
What program are you using to rip the music? Like are you ripping it from a cd that you own or are you downloading it?

Re: For all the computer people on the board....

There are programs you can use that tell you who makes the CDR. Taiyo Yuden is the manufacturer in Japan, that makes the best ones. You can score 100 for $30 at this site:

Believe me, the gold cd's are NOT the best by any stretch of the imagination. This is my lively hood, all I do is mess with stupid computer crap.

Re: For all the computer people on the board....

I have an ipod so I downloaded the songs from Itunes.

I was going to use Easy CD Creator that my mom has on her computer. Is that good?

Re: For all the computer people on the board....

HmmmI have not even seen gold cd's in a while.
If you downloaded from itunes, the bitrate of the songs are what prolly 128 or 192...thats a little low IMO. Do you have Music Match Jukebox? That can conver the songs to a higer bitrate for better sound.

o lord No I don't have that, what is it? Is it downloadable or do I have to buy it myself.

Also how much is it to have a cd put into my laptop?

Re: For all the computer people on the board....

Another option is these.

Supposedly silver on silver

I don't know actually how silver they are, but they site says if you need it to look like a pressed cd, these are the best.

I'm trying to think how the iTunes thing is going to work. You can't connect the ipod to another PC and take the songs off, can you? (I got one for xmas (thanks lovelyL ) and I thought it had somehting to do with autorizing the machine or something?) If you have iTunes on your PC or Mac, you should be able to burn 1 cd of music straight from that program. After that, use whatever software came with your burner, or Easy CD to duplicate that one CD. (Test it first)

If you made an iso of your CD once you know it is perfect, it would make it a whole lot easier. If you need instructions, tell me what program you plan to use to burn, and I'll try to tell you how.

What is 'iso'?

Re: For all the computer people on the board....

Ok, don't get in a panic.

First off, a computer lesson. LOL
Once a file is compressed smaller, you cannot increase the quality. Its like squishing a loaf of bread, it's still bread, but no matter how hard you try the shape isn't coming back.

iTunes and iStore stuff is in a different format. It's in AAC. It's a new tighter compression, meant to replace MP3 because of it's digital rights management features. (What I said about authorization before) 128 in AAC is supposed to be the equal to or better than 192 in MP3.

Go to your PC with the burner. Install iTunes on it, and hook up the iPod to it. There is an option to burn a CD from the iPod songs you pick, do that. Listen to the CD fully, and see how it is. Once you do that, you have a master CD you can use to build an iso file. (Basically an image of the CD) Ask for more help when you make it past burning the master CD.

Re: For all the computer people on the board....

You can download a basic version of Music Match Jukebox for free. Then you can use the convert option (under 'file')to convert the songs to a higher bitrate.
MrH, there is a way to get the songs off the pod once they are on it, but you need a third party utility for it. Check Ipod lounge forums for it, I forget what it's called.
I use MMJB for the pod, not itunes so I'm not familiar with itunes so much. I just know when you download from itunes the bitrate is usually 128 or 192, takes up less room on the pod...I think thats too low for a cd tho.
Edit to add.....oh yeah...ACC forgot about that.

So I will get the silver cds and burn a master cd from Itunes and that should be be an indication of the quality I will get. Am I understanding this correctly? Did I pass the class.....

Dj, there is no point to converting to a higher bitrate. Once it's compressed that won't do anything, believe me. You can't get sound quality back, or people would distribute files in 28k and just expand them to 320k or whatever.

I believe you can authorize 1 other PC than the one the ipod is initially on to take files off the ipod. (which in this case isn't necesary anyway) Like I said before AAC's 128 is supposed to be equal to MP3 192. It's not only about space, it's about digital rights management that they use AAC. (personally I'm an MP3 guy, and don't us AAC)

I agree 192k mp3's sound much better than 128k, but once you have the file there is nothing you can do about it. If it's encoded well originally, from a good source, some 128k mp3's are pretty decent.

Exactly. It should sound fine. Once you do that, you make an image of that disc, and you burn from the image. This way you don't have to keep swapping the master disc in and out.

So I've just been wasting my time making myself 'feel better' about having mp3's at a higher bitrate huh? Oh well.
So you can take songs back off the pod w/ itunes? Hmm good to know. You can't do that w/ MMJB.
I still have not paid for a CD in years (hold on I think thats the RIOA knocking at the door)
Well I have only been in the field for 3 yrs now with limited knowledge before that. I have gained alot of experience in that time but on a geek scale of one to ten I'm a 6 at best. You are a 10 MR H! LOL JK

Re: For all the computer people on the board....

while bitrate is important...to an average listener, they will not tell the difference. Take a song at 128, 192 etc... and see if you can tell the difference. Depending on the system playing it back, you won't notice. Medium to Higher end sound systems, you will notice the difference a lil better then a cheap $20 portable cd player.
