For Brides Being Married In the Catholic Church...

Has anyone heard of not being able to get married on certain days, i.e. All Saints or All Souls Day??? I thought I had everything going good and coming together and now I am being told that I might not be able to be married on that day!!!

Anyone hear of anything like this or experience something similar?

yes, I have heard of that. I believe you aren't able to get married on hold days of obligation (ie:all saints, assumtion, assention thurs, etc) or on holy days surrounding easter (good friday specifically)

yes - depending on the parish, you may not be able to get married on a Holy Day of Obligation.

just like you can't get married on Good Friday, Holy Saturday, etc.

For All Saint's Day, I believe it's up to your parish.

I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine you can't get married on a Holy Day of Obligation.

Ugh, damn catholic church.

Why is everyone so anti-Church? Every establishment and religion has rules.

You can't just barge into an RH and demand to be married at that given moment.

I don't think they do any sacraments on Holy Days. Whether it's a baptism, marriage, funeral, anything.

I understand what you are saying but I first was dealing with my parish that will not allow a former priest or any other priest for that matter (who also happens to be a very close family friend) back to my church for wedding ceremonies. So that option is out. And second, I am dealing with a budget and time of year...it kind of sucks more that I would have to pay extra just to have my wedding the week before! I understand holy days of obligation and all that but maybe this should be listed somewhere...b/c let's be honest, how is everyone supposed to keep track of every feast day or what have you! I went to catholic school all my life and I don't even know them all...I only remember the ones I got off of school for!

I guess that I could see, that's a kind of... pressing matter. I'd want it taken care of right away!

We were chatting about this yesterday... The RC church has vert strict rules... some are ridiculous but unfortunately it is what it is... if a church wedding is truly important to you, then ya gotta play by their rules....

good luck, i hope it all works out!!!

I went to Catholic school; we always got off for All Saints Day. I totally hear you about budget and time of year...I'm getting married next week in a Catholic Church, so it's not necessarily that you would have to move to an earlier date.

I totally understand it being hard when you have to change something; I'm not trying to attack you. I just don't understand the general 'How dare the Church have rules' attitude. Every institution has a rule of some sort.

THANK YOU!!!

And Holy Days are listed - in the bulletin you get when you attend church. That is why you should clear the date with the church before planning anything else.

And of courser they will have a funeral on the day of obligation if neccessary - you won't decompose if you don't have it that day right???

ITA. It just bothers me that it is generally accepted as okay to bash Catholicism. I know Catholics who joke about it and even bash their own religion in public. Often, instead of taking the time to learn about things and understand where they came from, we are quick to make harsh generalizations. I'm in grad school, and people raise their hands and state stereotypes and assumptions about my (and sometimes their) religion (in general education classes, btw), which often aren't true. Most of the time, they are the sorts of things one learns by watching one random episode of Family Guy or something like that. I would never raise my hand to say something like that about another religion. Call me sensitive, but society has become increasingly materialistic. At some point, people need to stop trying to be cool and start showing all of our cultural and religious backgrounds the respect they deserve.

I agree you guys... I was raised Catholic and am not the biggest proponent of gthe church, but that's why I choose not to be an active participant. We're getting married in church for FH, it was more important for him to do so than for me not to, if it were up to me, we wouldn't be.

I wonder often why people who are so set on getting married in church get so upset when they have to follow the church's rules. You can get married NOT in church and do whatever you want. You're presumably getitng married in the church because the religion is important to you and if the religion is important, then their rules are presumably important, right?

And I haven't practiced religion since Confirmation, but even I know that th day after Halloween is a holy day of obligation. And the fact that they do funerals on that day makes sense... sinc ea funeral has everything to do with the soul.. right?

Anyway, at any rate, I'm sorry things aren't going the way you wanted them to. Maybe a differnent church or a non-church ceremony?

This is SO well said! Everyone is always barking about the 'crazy' Catholics, yet no one takes the time to learn anything real about Catholocism.
