i voted $20-40k. some of our money is in mutual funds though, and we will probably leave it there. we're also not looking to buy a house until spring/summer 09 the earliest.

its been so hard to save for a home now that we have the expense of the wedding as well. honestly, most of my money has been going to the wedding fund and pretty much zero towards the home fund.

Right now we are savig for the wedding. Any money we make from the wedding will go right into a savings for a house. I hope to get a house 6-10 months after the wedding. I hate paying rent.
I was looking online today and our rent is as much as a mortage and it got me mad lol.

thanks for answering ladies. keep it up.
we have some $$ tied up as well, but i didnt include it since we definitely wont be using it. we're planning to start looking right after the holidays, like dec/jan of 2009. who knows though, it could be sooner or it could be later....

right now we're saving for the wedding, once that is done we'll start the house saving. We're actually lucky -- my parents have a 2 family house and we're gonna live in the apt upstairs for a couple of years so we can save as much $$ as we can

It's so funny to read this post now, b/c FH and just got off the phone and he was like 'Umm Brenda we have to start putting money away for the house or condo that we are going to buy.' So to answer your question zero as for now. I do know my dad is gonna give us 15K towards our down payment

Same here. We are buying FH's parent's house for half of what it's worth. I am so grateful that we are getting a whole pretty house for a fraction of the cost! I have money invested in stocks, CD's and MF's. I am also getting full responsibility of my accounts that my parent's set up for me when I was a baby. Not sure what's in there but I think it's enough! I forgot, I also have a 401K.
Girls, I work in Insurance and Financial Services- I suggest stashing at least 10% of your salary into 401K. It adds up so fast! It's never to early to start saving for retirement!

Re: For those of us saving for a home/condo/co-op
I have saved a lot (FH can't really save because he needs to get out of CC debt first), but my savings are big because of my salary and bonuses. We want to stay in our rental for at least two more years, maybe 3, because we have a 3 bedroom and the rent is pretty good. hopefully by then I will be in a position to put down a significant chunk of change on an apartment in a good building or on a house in Forest Hills.

Re: For those of us saving for a home/condo/co-op
With saving for the wedding its been difficult- I'm going to say we have nothing so far because all out money is going towards the big event.
However, we are going to rent for a year and hope for the best.
Perhaps we'll get some money back from our wedding (they say you usually get 80%)
I'm just concerned about getting into the vicious cycle of renting- it may be hard to get out

Re: For those of us saving for a home/condo/co-op
My fiance and I just bought a co-op..and are moving into it soon. And 'wow' have we learned alot! It's not just the down payment, there are so many fees and other purchases involved that people forgot (more-so with a co-op).
Aside from the downpayment, I think have an extra $5,000 for fees associated with closing are good to have.
Good luck! The housing market is def. a buyers market, but the interest rates from the banks aren't so hot...hopefully things will get better.
