Ugh yes. I grew up in a part of Queens that is a VERY short distance from Manhattan. Now I go from Carle Place to Penn Station. My next job will NOT be in NYC!!!

I'm a weirdo. I like taking the train. It's totally relaxing for me. I sleep and read. I'd be too stressed if I had to drive and sit in traffic everyday. I'd have horrible road-rage.

I agree that you can sleep, read, knit, or whatever you want on the train (within reason) and I could never imagine driving to work for that long every day. But I think most people who drive, wouldn't drive as far as we take the train (i.e. NYC)

I guess for most who take the LIRR, the idea that we are at the mercy of a train schedule is what is so horrible. You can't just hop on a train the same way you hop in your car. You have to take a subway to Penn and then take the next available train. So if you friend drives one hour and leaves work at 5PM and gets home at 6PM, you have to leave work at 5PM, get to Penn by 5:15 or so and depending on your train line, your next train could get you home at 6:30 or 7PM.

Grrrr.

I hate the LIRR and most of the rude riders. I had to sit in a middle seat today (already a bad ride) and the guy inside was sprawled out halfway across my seat and had his giant gym bag across his lap and half of mine. I offered to put it up for him, but he pretended to be asleep. The other guy had his knees up against the back of the seat and was reading a book with his elbows dug into my side. I'm glad these two were comfy! I wasn't and I spend too much time on the LIRR.

I like taking the train vs. driving, anyday, but the rude folks, the delays, the dirty trains....i enjoy my naps too!

I have been taking the Speonk train, the double decker...and my train ride is much longer....vs. the Ronkonkoma, but the train is CLEAN, PEACEFUL, QUIET, and more of a pleasure, but it just

a neverending ride.......

Re: For those who commute via LIRR...

i was just getting used to my commute from Huntington to the city

1hr each way

But I did like that at least on the way to work I could sleep cause it only made two stops before penn.

The way home was the killer.

With the other stuff I do (school and Physical Therapy) I was rarely home before 9pm

Im umemployed now and I am desperately looking for a spot on the Island, but so far it looks like I may be back in the City. *shrug* hey, it's a job.

That's my problem! I take metro north & toda I went to buckle my shoes & all of a sudden it was 3 minutes later , & I knew I woldn't make my train, so I waited for the next one & on teh way, went ot through the trash out, which made me miss ANOTHER train, by 3 minutes! ,thus I arrived at work 40 minutes late!

I am looking for a local job too, but it is difficutlt. It is probably faster to find a job in NYC, so I am torn with the waiting or the just taking another NYC job. And I can imagine being unemployed, you want something ASAP.

I wouldn't want a long drive either. My aunt commutes from Uniondale to Holbrook or something like that. What a PIA!

What time do you get up and then leave to get to the 5:54 train? more power to you, but I am out of the house at 6a.m. for the 6:24...but just wondering how you do it for 5:54a.m.

I live pretty close to the train station. I'm usually out of the house by 5:30. Not much different than what you do!

ETA: I get up around 4:30 - 4:45

the trains drive me crazy. i dont mind commuting its much better than driving but when there are extensive delays or the combine trains and you need to stand for 1 hour its a pain in the arse. This morning they combine two trains and delayed the next train by 10 minutes the first train was so packed i waited for the second one and an hour commute turning into 1 1/2. so glad they increase our ticket for less service.

Is Ronkonkoma bad? Just asking b/c we may look for home along that line?

Re: For those who commute via LIRR...

Ronkonkoma is fine....Ronkonkoma to me is its own metropolis! I just live closer to the patchogue train, which then I don't have to do the drive to Ronkonkoma. I use both the Ronkonkoma and Patchogue train stations.
