For Those Who Have Been to Greece...

...What is the food like? Is it like American-Greek food? Would a vegetarian be limited? Is the food different on the island's than in say, Athens?

I think its similar, but a little different, and certainly more variety. Neither DH nor I are vegetarians, but I don't remember always eating meat dishes. And one restaurant in particular had a very delicious grilled veggie dish with cheese, I still remember it two years later.

Worst case scenario, you can always eat the greek salad and grape leaves

The food is quite good, especially on the islands... its a bit more rustic I guess, it wasn't that much different from the greek food I have had in the states. I don't think a vegetarian would be so limited isn't there that mousaka, the veggie lasanga?

Yes, veggie mousaka...and falafel is my favorite. I just didn't know if what I eat in Greek restaurants here is 'Americanized' and completely different from authentic Greek food.

Thanks!

The food is pretty much the same as it is here. Except it tastes SO much fresher and a million times better! I hardly eat meat when I go to Greece - mostly seafood and lots of veggies!

I dont think I ever saw veggie lasagne being sold in Greece But maybe things have changed since I went a couple of years ago.

I think you will be OK though. The fruit is yummy and so are the veggies. They serve pasta at most places. Not sure if you eat seafood or fish, but there is plenty of that also. Like Demetra said, there are many choices.

Also depends when you you are going... if you go during Lent, they will have many veggie dishes for those who are fasting from meat.

I had no problem finding meat free dishes. I think those are some of their best.

My family and I went to greece about 8 years ago and the food was excellent - I did eat a lot of grilled meats - but that was because I am allergic to goats milk and a lot of food had feta in it - but there were lots of vegetable dishes and salads available.
