I am actually really upset by this and I don't know if I was the only one in the dark about it...
Apparently, the 18-20% 'gratuity' that we are all paying THOUSANDS for doesn't even go to the staff. The servers, bartenders, cooks, etc dont get gratuity from us brides and grooms unless you go and hand them cash! That 18% (or whatever) is HOUSE MONEY. That gets used to pay the servers their $6/hour salary. This is what a person told me yesterday at a RH I was talking to. Your guests and you are more than welcome to tip the servers, bartenders, cooks, etc...but if no one does = NO TIP!
Just wanted to let you all know if you didnt already. I hope this makes sense.

Re: FYI Tipping
I was told 'all' RH's were like this. I went home and spoke with my mom (she used to serve weddings and stuff when she was in-between pregnancies) and she said that she would get paid her salary and would only be tipped if the bride and groom tipped her or if guests tipped her.

Well unfortunately, I hope this is not true. Because I cannot afford to go and tip everyone and their mother after paying the RH 20 grand!!!

Re: FYI Tipping
This is very true and from what I know, it applies in ALL RH's. I used to work as a bartender at a RH and my brother is a maitre d at another (he was originally a waiter). And that is how they do it at both of those halls. That 'gratuity' that they work into your contract is actually their base pay, NOT a tip. Unfortunately most people don't know this so, no tip for the waitstaff.

Re: FYI Tipping
Oh yeah... the bridal attendant!!!! I was told about the maitre d but I forgot about that! Even for the eparty they say tip the maitre d between 1 and 3 dollars. Sorry bud, but you're getting only a buck a person from us!!!!

Re: FYI Tipping
Well when I'm a guest at a wedding, I tip the bartender and the waiter because I know they usually won't get a tip. But like I said, most people don't know so...

Yup you always have to end up giving everyone tips regardless of the gratuity you are paying.

Re: FYI Tipping
some people do leave tips to the waiters and busboys...Whenever we go to an event, FH always tips them real well at the beginning of the night.

Same here, I tip the bartender in the beginning so he'll take care of us and servers at the end of the night......

Re: FYI Tipping
This is very true - i know my family had weddings in the past ten years at 4 different halls and it applies for all halls
idk if my cousin went overboard but after she was done with the tipping she spent an extra $2K - i have not sat down and figured it out (btw the waiters, bridal attendant etc) but I am assuming I will end up spending a little less than her bc i am having a smaller wedding
good idea to inform everyone bc this can be a nasty surprise at the end when money is at its tightest!
FH always tips the bartender and waiters at all events we go to - and sometimes if he has to work and cannot attend with me he reminds me to do it myself ( lol i always forget money when i go out bc i am used to him being there!) - Fh was a waiter, a busboy and a valet so he thinks it is VERY important to tip!

Re: FYI Tipping
you should definitely consult with your hall. My hall told me that the gratutity includes all wait and service staff except for the maitr'd (who gets typically $3-5 per person). If we want to tip additional on that it's our option, but it is not expected.

Re: FYI Tipping
CLM is 18% covers the 'house'. CLM gets a extra charge for having a Matrd but its not a tip. Most Halls do this.
It was said to me that it is sudgested to tip the MatrD $2-3pp and $100 bridal attendant. I realized people tip the bartender on their own and I AM NOT tipping him extra. Same thing for valet, guests can tip them if they want.. otherwise I really don't care.
Anything extra is B/S and i wouldn't book with a hall that says otherwise.
wow I didn't know that - that really stinks and is unfair...the waiters/cooks/bartenders should definitely get a tip
