Got into a fight with my FH

Original post by NapaValleyGirl

I'm sitting here at work wanting to cry and I know we shouldn't talk to each other right now because we spent last night fighting and woke up this morning fighting again.

Things were said and I feel like nothing will be the same again. I'm so upset....

So, just to give a little background. Yesterday, FH's office decided to play hooky and go to the movies and just go bar hopping all day. At about 7 pm he calls me to tell me he's still going out to another bar. mind you, they've been bar hopping all day. 11:30 rolls around and I call his cell phone. No answer.... I keep calling and calling and finally he answers and I can tell he's totally drunk and he's at this female co-workers apartment (with other people from his office) still drinking.

I guess what irked me is that I didn't hear from him for a long time and he was at a female co-workers apartment (with other people.) do you think I'm overreacting?

if he was alone then that'd be REALLY wrong, but he was there with others although he should've called to let you know but i dont think this should be the end of a relationship...there are many times where a situation is so harmless but it just looks bad, i know ive been in some situations where it was nothing at all but it looked so bad and i realized oh god this looks so bad and i understand if someone gets mad. If he was out with a bunch of co-workers and everyone suggested going and urging him to go he probably just wanted to continue hanging out with everybody

I rew up wioth my parents always teaching me to never go to bed angry. If FH and I are fightning, we can't go to sleep till things are better.

I hope everything works out!

i dont believe that works for everyone... I know for me, it helps when i can 'sleep on it' and usually i'll wake up in the morn feeling much better about everything

I dont think you were overreacting. Honestly I would have been truly upset also. You are both at the point in your lives where an open line of commnuication should be taking place. If he wants to go out for a few drinks fine there is a limit though. He pushed it a bit. Don't worry about the fight it will blow over (sometimes it is healthy to have an occassional fall out) rather than have bad feelings pile up. When the time is right for you both have a serious & rational conversation. I promise you it will be the same again if not better

there is NO excuse of why he couldnt call you to tell you what was going on... You need to TRAIN him gurl!!! every one has a cell phone these days... i can see maybe if it was dead but even then, he could use someone elses just so you're not worrying... i've beaten that in FH's head and he always lets me know what hes doin/where hes goin... god forbid something happens, you would have no idea if hes ead or alive

I know totally. And in retrospect, I definitely reacted harshly and it was totally innocent and he was caught up in the moment. I think what got to me is that i hadn't heard from him in hours. He was so apologetic last night and but thismorning he woke up and was just pissed and it just led to another fight. I hope we can work things out and actually enjoy the holidays.

Thanks for taking the time to listen.

Especially when I see all those signs all over the place of that guy who went missing after going to a bar in NYC. I get extremely anxious about that stuff! HOnestly, what was going through my head was pure panic.

Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, we say things that we actually don't mean. Of course, those things are hurtful but they do not represent what we mean of our partners. How could they, when we think so much of them to marry them and spend the rest of our lives with them.

With that said, I know it sounds cliche, but time heals all wounds. The same way that you are thinking about it at work and it hurts you, your FH is also thinking where he is. Things will get better and, with time, you guys will mend whatever was 'broken.' I know it doesn't seem that way now, but look at it this way, he loves you so much that he could have walked away without kissing you this morning but he opted to do the opposite. Trust that things will work out!

I think what u just said to us...about the pit in your stomacch bc u feel like things were said without thinking and were said out of anger is exactly what you need to be telling him. FH and I both have venemous tongues and say some really bad things to each other when we fight...but we always come to our senses and realize that sometimes when someone hurts your feelings you say the meanest thing you can thing of to reciprocate that hurt.

I'm really going to try and work on it. It's like the 'leo' side of me. When I get hurt, I just lash out and say ridiculous things....

I don't think you're over reacting at all but maybe with him being drunk wasn't the best time to address the situation....when he's hung over the next morning is!!!! Seriously, he's not going to act rationally in a fight if he's drunk. Just wait for him to sober up and then tell him how you felt. That way it REALLY sinks in....jmo...good luck

it will be ok. fights make you stronger as a couple. you will get over it. just give it some time.....the saying 'you shouldnt go to bed angry' is BS.....you need time to cool off - sometimes its better that way - so you dont say things that you will regret....especially if you are a hot head like me

i am sure your FH is feeling the same way as you right now - which means you both love eachother very much! so dont worry it will be ok!

i agree about the 'not going to bed angry thing' sometimes after a big fight, all i want is to go to bed ... i know that when i wake up in the morning, my mind will be fresh and i wont have that frustration from the fight. i feel like going to bed angry is productive sometimes...

thats just me tough ... oh and mulligan i guess hahaha

I think I am the same way... I just couldn't forget the feeling of anxiety that I had not knowing where he was and having him come home totally drunk. I just woke up feeling angry.

see now thats a totally different story... FH and I were both at the apartment, I just went to bed... he watched tv in the living room and came to bed when i was already asleep. If he were out wandering and DRUNK after a big fight, there is something wrong with that. He shouldnt be leaving, let alone drinking until hes drunk... JMHO

He was already drunk when he got home. He was out all day with his co-workers. I was upset that I hadn't heard from him in 4 hours. I guess he was upset with me because he felt I was being irrational..

He left it on vibrate because of work and forgot to put his ringer back on!

I am sure everything will be just fine When FH and I fight we sometimes get nasty and I hate that we do that b/c things always get said that no one means, they just get caught up in the moment. It will pass and it will be the same again!!!

Re: Got into a fight with my FH

I can understand why you were upset, because it is tough when you are worried about someone. One the other hand, I ALWAYS forget to turn my ringer on, and if he was there with other people just having a good time, it is totally harmless.

Also, I think it is really important to try not to fight with someone who has had too much to drink, that never ends well.

I would say - just apologize for your part in the situation, that maybe you overreacted and ask for him to be more conscientious in the future about letting you know where he is.

I definitely don't think this should be a 'make or break' fight in your relationship though. FH and I have had a few 'big' fights, and you have to realize that its hard AND wonderful to share your life with someone and the fights and resolving them teach you about each other and help you to learn to be a stronger couple.
