Govenor ELIOT SPITZER ((discuss))

Original post by Kimbalina

ALBANY - Gov. Eliot Spitzer faced a chorus of calls for his resignation Monday as he was engulfed by a sex scandal involving his alleged hiring of a high-priced prostitute last month.

At a news conference in Manhattan, a grim-faced Spitzer, with his wife, Silda Wall, by his side, issued a public apology for what he called a 'private matter,' defended his reformist agenda and hinted at leaving the Executive Mansion after only 14 months. But he hadn't stepped down as of late Monday night.

'I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family and that violates my or any sense of right and wrong,' said the Democratic governor and father of three daughters. 'I apologize first and most importantly to my family. I apologize to the public whom I promised better.'

This guy is just an idiot. FH was involved in politics for a while and i'm sad to say that 90% of these men are total scum. I don't know if it's a power trip but it's definitely a way of life for them with their conventions and 'out of town' trips. I've seen way too much to even be shocked by this but I do feel SO sorry for his wife. Although it must really suck for her, I am certain she knew this was going on or ..... most likely in Denial. I'm confidant that this wasn't a 'one time' thing and from experience with close friends....i've seen their wives simply turn their heads when REALLY suspicious things happen.

FH's closest friend was the Town Administrator and accidentally dialed his house while in the car with his 'girlfriend.' His wife heard the whole thing....yet still believed his claim that someone else was using his car........ It's just a way of life and nothing new. You can be disgusted in him but don't forget all the others who just haven't been caught.

I agree...I'm sure she was not shocked. But now she's mortified because the rest of the country knows 'their' dirty little secret. And that's a shame...for his daughters too. They were probably kept in the dark I'm sure and now this is their father and mother on blast. It's awful.

I agree government officials tend to be put on pedestals, and they shouldnt be.

Sometimes I think women turn their heads, because they are afraid to face what ever it may be head on.

Or they're comfortable with what they're getting in return....the lifestyle, the admiration, etc. Sad but true sometimes.

Exactly! I mean if you didnt have to worry about money etc.. and you maybe already didnt have the best marriage,, what would you do?

Think about it! Mrs. Spitzer walked on and off that stage. He has been CAUGHT publicly cheating.. unless there was some rock hard pre-nup.. he messed up. IF she wants a divorce,, what will she NOT get??

Oh yeah...if they get a divorce she will be WELL compensated...not to mention she'll be fine without him. She has a Harvard law degree for god's sake. She gave up her career for her family...now she should get it back and make her own life.

honestly im torn with what should be done, what will be done and what his wife wll or shoudl do....

he comitted a crime he should jsut like ANYONE else should pay the consequences (but i highly doubt he will see the inside of a jail cell, its sad but thats the 'norm' today... )

2. his wife is standing by him for now... she must be confused and scared for the sake of her family (she has 3 teenage daughters... his wife must be so confused with where she should go from here she has a lot to think about)

3. i feel HORRIBLE for his daughters, this is a complete embrassment... i dont know how they will face their peers again (or at least for a while)

4. governors are just ppl and ppl scre w up. havign a 'title' does not make anyone better than the other... it SHOULD mean IMO that you have better moral judgement than the avg. individual but as Clinton showed us... men are men

5. he should loose his job. no questions asked.

thats all.

His daughters must be moritified! They are not babies. This must be embarassing for the whole family. The night before Valentines day to get a hooker,, then 8 hours later do a news confrence,,,

Yeah, that hurts...i was like, the night before Valentine's Day?!?!?!? OUCH.

I didn't even hear that it was the night before V-day :-/

But seriously - what kind of message is that sending to your daughters? What kind of FATHER or HUSBAND does that? Especially one that is in politics. . .he should a role model for people, I really am just physically disgusted over the whole situation.

I agree he's disgusting. But honestly I think people give politicians too much credit. The people want them to be these extra-moral never do wrong superhumans and that's just not the reality. They have jobs just like you and I, there's are just more high profile so they should behave accordingly, but they don't always, they screw up. I'm not excusing his behavior at all, don't get me wrong, I just think we put too much faith in them.

In the end he's just another cheating man....his occupation just happens to be a governor.

I agree - I think I just meant that someone who is in the spotlight really SHOULD be acting in a certain manner. I certainly don't think that politicians are superhuman and have strong morals - its just that you would think that someone so high profile would understand the implications of their actions a little bit.

Its just pathetic.

Would YOU stand by your man in the public eye like Mrs. S?

I could not. I would not want to be remotely seen as his support

I personally don't care what he did...it is reprehensible, not to mention illegal, but I feel its between him and his wilfe. Men can be pigs, and just because they are in office doesnt mean they are above it (see: Clinton, Giuliani). I am more concerned about the effect this will have on the state. Politics in Albany has been horribly corrupt for years, and finally someone was making an attempt to change things...and then this happens.

I really don't know how these women are able to stand next to their husbands. Look at Hillary. She's another one.

I agree 100%. I also felt the same way about bill and Hillary with the whole Monica thing. In the end that's their business. Just run the country (or state in this case) without interruption/influence by your personal life. Work is work.

okay on a PERSONAL level he broke a law ( legally and morally) and there should be consequences for that.

but as a whole, we know way too much/care way too much about our politician's personal lives. if he/she is doing a good job, that is all that matters. obviously this case is different bc he broke a law BUT i mean more in general.

In italy, there was a PORN star in their parliament and almost all of their high ranking officials have affairs - its just a known thing but no one cares as long as they are doing their jobs. . .

as for his wife, i doubt she will stay with him BUT i think that everyone is so quick to say 'i would divorce my husband' but think about it. . . it wouldnt be YOU divorcing spitzer (LOL ew). . . it would be YOU divorcing YOUR DH - and no matter the circumstances that would NEVER be an easy or fast decision. . . bc even though he has done something terrible it is STILL the man you married. . . I can't even imagine what she must be going through!

This is part of my problem with Hilary. I would not be able to support someone who did that to me. Not even for show.

I think you raise some good points!
I still think I couldnt stand next to greg (my fh). To me that is a deal breaker.

I find what you said about Italy very intriguing! What a diffrence in the way we and other nations look at officials

I completely agree with this. Plus we really dont know anything about their personal relationship. This sort of thing may have gone on for years, she may know all about it, she may do the same types of things herself, who knows. In the end its each womans (or man's) decision to do what is right for them and their family.

This guy is a big time hypocrite. He took down a prostitution ring a few years ago. Now, he is INVOLVED. That is pretty damn bad. Kind of funny too. I am just saying because 1. I never liked him. 2. He went after people in my profession and we are all loving this. He worked so hard to take down corruption and now he is one of the most corrupt out there. My Cousin is a NY State Senator and he has always said 'Spitzer is like the Devil. You are going to see hell break loose with him.' And he was right! Like I said in my other post, I can't wait for him to resign. He is a dirty rat. Everyone in politics knew it. So, that's why they were trying to get all the dirt on him. And they got him. As for his wife- she is only standing by him for political reasons. She is going to take him to the cleaners. You watch. It's going to be an ugly battle.

You should care. For someone to take down Prostitution a few years back and headline the fact that he did a great thing and then be caught in it- what kind of a leader is that??????? I can't wait 'til he's out. Bring on Paterson.
