Govenor ELIOT SPITZER ((discuss))

Original post by Kimbalina

ALBANY - Gov. Eliot Spitzer faced a chorus of calls for his resignation Monday as he was engulfed by a sex scandal involving his alleged hiring of a high-priced prostitute last month.

At a news conference in Manhattan, a grim-faced Spitzer, with his wife, Silda Wall, by his side, issued a public apology for what he called a 'private matter,' defended his reformist agenda and hinted at leaving the Executive Mansion after only 14 months. But he hadn't stepped down as of late Monday night.

'I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family and that violates my or any sense of right and wrong,' said the Democratic governor and father of three daughters. 'I apologize first and most importantly to my family. I apologize to the public whom I promised better.'

i think prostitution should be legal - at least that way it could be regulated so that protection has to be used and workers are screened for diseases - i think less people might contract STDs that way - people are going to pay for sex regardless of its legal or not so why not make it safer?

i dont think he should be forced to resign because he cheated on his wife - people cheat all the time and that shouldnt interfere with your job - think about it - would any of us be fired or forced to resign because we cheated on our FH's? i do not think peoples personal lives shouldnt affect their jobs - i dont condone adultery BUT what goes on in other peoples marriages is their business and iam not one to judge..

for me the problem is that he did something that was illegal and THAT is where i see a problem - not that he cheated - i could care less that he cheated on his wife - it happens all the time and its none of our business

I personally don't care what he did...it is reprehensible, not to mention illegal, but I feel its between him and his wilfe. Men can be pigs, and just because they are in office doesnt mean they are above it (see: Clinton, Giuliani). I am more concerned about the effect this will have on the state. Politics in Albany has been horribly corrupt for years, and finally someone was making an attempt to change things...and then this happens.

You should care. For someone to take down Prostitution a few years back and headline the fact that he did a great thing and then be caught in it- what kind of a leader is that??????? I can't wait 'til he's out. Bring on Paterson.

Yes well. Its just the latest scandal du jour. Yes it was wrong, illegal and hypocritical. However I dont think it was any worse than anything that goes on in politics of all levels every day. In fact, almost every week there is a new scandal in the current Bush adminstration - lies, coverups, etc etc etc.... I could go on, I think we all know what goes on there. With far worse consequences than this Spitzer thing. But you rarely see anyones career ruined over it, like what is happening to Spitzer right now. In the grand scheme of things, I really believe that this is an issue between him and his wife.

I understand what everyone is saying that its none of our business and what goes on inside a marriage is something that is private and I agree with that, until that person is a public official who upholds the law.

How do you expect to have anyone ever respect you or the law again if you cannot uphold it yourself?

I work in the financial industry and Spitzer has led many crusades and has published a lot of slander against companies and their work ethics. Which is actually pretty funny to me now, that this man had the nerve to pose ethical questions? To me this is just a slap in the face and i think he should resign.

trust me that these $5500 an hour hookers get checked every week. Did you see the special on porn stars? They have to get tested every week and they always have to use condoms. Things still happen though bc it can show up negative at first even though you are positive. BUt with that theory then should drugs be legal? people do it regardless and maybe this way they can regulate the drugs and make sure its not laced with deadly things

LOL he is not resigning bc he cheated, i mean other powerful have cheated on their wives. But he was part of a prostitution ring and that is illegal. When he was the DA he fought against this infact. This is a case made by the FBI, paying for prostitutes is illegal so that is what the problem is

Maybe I'm just jaded then.....if I was shocked and horrified every time a politician did something illegal or immoral, I'd spend my whole life in a state of shock. I think I'm just numb to it at this point.

i agree and feel the same way. To tell you the truth, i am more shocked about how shocked others are, rather than hearing about this. I guess those ads on tv do a great job bc people do believe them. I personally think the most corrupt are politicians. And how shocked can we be, we dont know any of these people personally.

He got caught.

I don't think this was a shot in the dark.

I realize he was a John, but men cheat all the time.

Does it have to be more scandalous because prostitution is illegal.

blah

Exactly. IMO its more scandalous because it has to do with S*X, and not something more mundane.

Would YOU stand by your man in the public eye like Mrs. S?

I could not. I would not want to be remotely seen as his support

I suppose she probably knew and to act shocked!! She couldn't 'not' stand by him, she probably felt someone must know that she knew.
How humiliating would it be to her to have someone out that she knew, and her public outrage was to save face.

This guy is just an idiot. FH was involved in politics for a while and i'm sad to say that 90% of these men are total scum. I don't know if it's a power trip but it's definitely a way of life for them with their conventions and 'out of town' trips. I've seen way too much to even be shocked by this but I do feel SO sorry for his wife. Although it must really suck for her, I am certain she knew this was going on or ..... most likely in Denial. I'm confidant that this wasn't a 'one time' thing and from experience with close friends....i've seen their wives simply turn their heads when REALLY suspicious things happen.

FH's closest friend was the Town Administrator and accidentally dialed his house while in the car with his 'girlfriend.' His wife heard the whole thing....yet still believed his claim that someone else was using his car........ It's just a way of life and nothing new. You can be disgusted in him but don't forget all the others who just haven't been caught.

I agree!! I think she knew or knew something was up. He was taking money (large amounts) out of his own personal bank and putting it in another secret bank account to pay off the hooker. And um if you have a marriage that i would like to think most people have the wife would know if money is coming in or out.

but i also dont know if i see her as weak or strong for standing next to her husband as he resigned on tv. Um I think she could be strong because she put a face on and stood next to him while he spoke of his wrongdoings. but I KNOW I WOULD NEVER stand next to my husband if he did that. I would be mortified and disgusted and feel violated. Like he disrespected me and my daughters. So with that said I could see his wife as weak as well because she felt she couldnt leave his side and didnt want to put herself out there to look bad or something by not standing beside her husband supporting him.
