Greek/Italian Weddings~Anyone??

Greek/Italian Weddings~Anyone??

I'm Italian & my FH is Greek.
Are there any other Greek/Italian weddings going on? I'm curious to know some Greek or Italian traditions that maybe my FH & I aren't aware of. Any ideas?

Do Greeks really break plates? Do catering halls actually allow this to happen?
I know about the money dancing which I think is cool. Is there anything else?

What are some good traditional Italian songs?
I'm having a hard time thinking of past Italian weddings that I've been too.

There is a bride named GrkItawedding or grkitlbride on here, I forgot which one. Are you getting married at a Greek Orthodox church? I def want to break plates at my wedding, its an old tradition and FH and I would love to do it and we are if our RH allows us, they better, hehe. Yeah there is money thown everywhere at these things and the 'fire dance' is funny , we were talking about that the other day. When someone dances around a lit shot and tried to down it without touching it, its great!!!!!

Hi..

I'm Italian and my huband is Greek....

Most of his family still lives in Greece and couldn't make it to our wedding though so we didn't do very much traditional stuff. Just a few circle dances (my MIL did buy everyone handkerchiefs because apparently some traditional dances involve you dancing around with them?) She also talked alot about one specific dance that welcomes the bride to the family (and even suggested that we all go to the church to learn it) but that never happened...sorry I can't be more specific...

As for italian...there is one party song that is popular which I don't know the name of but I told my DJ 'that italian song' and he knew which one I was talking about...

Oh, and if you're up for it...incorporate Jordan almonds into your favors...I find them super traditional/old fashioned and almost overruled my husband when he suggested it but he won out and both of our families were very happy...

Hope at least some of this helps...and PS...do you live in Arlington County, Va? My husband grew up there and I lived there when I met him but since then we've bought a condo and become Loudoun Countyers

BIG FAT GREEK ITALIAN WEDDING HERE!!!

I am the Greek, he is the Italian though.

#1 Jordan Almonds (aka koufeta) are a must!

#2 Greek band keeps the $ that is thrown, unless you arrange otherwise with the band

#3 I don't think the RHs will allow the plate breaking, nor have I seen it at any weddings I have gone to. This, I believe, is an older tradition.

#4 The Tarantella is a popular italian traditional dance

Thanks Girls

We're not getting married in a Greek church so I don't have to worry about the crown crossing. We're getting married at JT & it's a non religion mass.

I have the boubournieres ordered & I added the jordan almonds in an odd number for good luck.

We aren't having a Greek band. We have a DJ. So, just curious who gets the money if we don't have a Greek band?? My FH's family said it goes to the DJ or the Maitre D'. Is that correct?

Keep the ideas coming girls...I love them!!!
And Congrats to you all

is the dj a greek dj? if so, then i would say him because he knows of the custom and probably expects it. if he isn't, then i don't see why he would get it, especially since he won't know to expect it. did you discuss this with the dj when you booked?

i don't see why the maitre'd would get it though?

We are having a Band and a greek musician and we made the band write on the contract that all money thrown goes to the band., after all that is how they get paid. If you are not having a greek musician....i would keep the money no????? just a suggestion.

Re: Greek/Italian Weddings~Anyone??

Nope our DJ isn't Greek nor Italian. People keep telling me to use that money towards tipping the Maitre D' at the end of the night. Since the DJ isn't Greek then the money is ours to do what ever we wish with it, right?

I saw yes....u have to tip the Maitre D anyway.
Yes., make sure you write that on ur contract....that all the money goes to you. DJ and RH.

Re: Greek/Italian Weddings~Anyone??

I agree it's our money since there's no Greek band or DJ

You mentioned something about having it down on our contract. Our contract with whom? Our RH or our DJ? I'm not sure why we would have to have it on any contract since it's not a Greek DJ and why would JT assume it's theres?
Curious....thank you

You never know...I put it down with the Band.
Our Band has one greek member..whos knows if he expects it. Just to cover our butts...and not have a problem later on.

I suggested to do it for both., not sure...I would do it just because ......

i say maybe its worth mentioning to both, but say it like you are giving them the heads up on what your tradition is, so that night there is no fighting.

Re: Greek/Italian Weddings~Anyone??

At an ITALIAN WEDDING five almonds signify five wishes for the bride and groom: health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity. These almonds decorate each place setting as favors, tucked into pretty boxes or decorative bags called 'bomboniere'. The pretty packages are often personalized with the couple's names and wedding date.

So five sugared almonds are symbolically eaten

They remind us that life is both bitter and sweet.

The five almonds are five wishes for the new husband and wife

These wishes are health, wealth, happiness, children, and a long life

for the italian side:

i am dancing with my dad to figlia mia

then there are the regular italian songs like the tarantella and that baccala song lol

i think italians and greeks both have hte big elaborate favors (bomboniere) we joke in my family that if my mom had her way we would be giving every guest a brand new car - lol
