Groom's Mom Wears Black

Question for you brides:

My mom just bought a dress for the wedding. Thing is that the dress is black but it has a sequin design on it. She likes it a lot and says its very elegant.

Though she plans on looking elsewhere as well, she does like it a lot and bought it at a steal.

Is a black dress appropriate for the mother of the groom? Would you find it offensive?

Relationship between mom and fiance is perfectly fine and color is not a reflection of any negativity.

Please provide opinions.

Edited to say I haven't seen the dress yet.

Re: Groom's Mom Wears Black

I think the dress sounds great. A lot of moms wear black to weddings these days.

Re: Groom's Mom Wears Black

what time of day are you getting married?

What is the mother of the bride wearing?

What color are the BM's wearing??

Personally, I do not think the MOB or MOG should wear Black or White to the wedding but if there is a color 'theme' going then it would look very nice!!

Re: Groom's Mom Wears Black

My fmil is wearing black and I personally am fine with it, as long as she likes it and feels comfortable in it. I've seen my FMIL's dress and it's beautiful.

I wanted my BMs to wear black, but it didn't go with my color scheme.
So I say its fine that she wears black.

Re: Groom's Mom Wears Black

Unless it's a black and white wedding, I don't think the mom's should wear an all black dress.

Re: Groom's Mom Wears Black

I had posted a similiar question a while back. I think whatever your Mom or His Mom feels best in they should wear (except for White of course).

My mom is wearing a beautiful black dress, and I have to say she is blissful about it because she feels most comfortable in it, which makes me happy.

I am with Lisa Rose. I would ask your Fiance how she feels about it though. If she is okay with it, then why not.

Re: Groom's Mom Wears Black

My mom is wearing black, and I am getting married on a Sunday morning! My fmil & grandma on the other hand would never wear black to the wedding, and that's their opinion and belief. In my opinion, times have changed, and I think it is perfectly fine to wear black & if she feels & looks great in it, why not?

Re: Groom's Mom Wears Black

My BM dresses are burgundy too and I wouldn't be opposed to my mother or FMIL wearing black. But to be honest, I would prefer to see them in another earth tone. Brown is becoming the new black and I think it's very elegant.

Re: Groom's Mom Wears Black

I think the idea that moms should not wear black to the wedding is a little 'old school'. Some people still follow tradition, and stay away from black, but to be honest with you, the last few weddings I went to, the MOB, AND MOGs were wearing black. By no means do I see it as a reflection of the mother's feelings on the marriage. If your mom loves the dress, she should wear it.

Re: Groom's Mom Wears Black

I'm not a fan of black at weddings except for tuxes, but it fits got sequins & it is a night wedding, it will look more elegant than morbid & will be fine as long as your fiance is cool with it.

I think that is perfectly fine.. esp. if you and your fiance are ok with it..

I think that the most important part is that your mom feel comfortable and beautiful in what she wears..

PS my MIL wore her wedding gown! which was champagne colored (it looked white) I was fine with it though..

Re: Groom's Mom Wears Black

If it's okay with your FI then its okay. My mother and FMIL would never wear black, but I don't have a problem with it myself. It's an old rule that no one listens to anymore.
