Here is my problem: My room holds 158 - 156 plus the bride and groom. My list currently has 172 people on it We were absolutely fine until FILs added 26 people FH has never even met, people that 'almost definitely will not come' - some are on dialysis in TX, etc - but they are FMIL's parents' brothers / sisters so they 'have to get an invite.' I disagree completely - we are only inviting close family and friends, and the family line ends at first cousins. Why can't FMIL tell her father that 1) the room doesn't accomodate these people and 2) we had to keep the guest list to CLOSE family and friends - the bride and groom's close family, not the grandparents' close family. I mean, I am not inviting 2nd cousins I watched grow up because I have no room. (And no $$$$!)
FH tells me it's fine, they aren't coming anyhow, but my feeling is ... HOW DO YOU KNOW FOR SURE? You don't. I want to put them onto the B list but FH says no way.
I am sending my family's invites out first though, then his a few weeks later so that I can hopefully have SOME reassurance (in the way of a few no's) when it comes time to mail to these relatives who are 'almost definitely' not coming.....
I just checked my numbers ... even if 15% say no (I think I will have a very high YES rate since I am only inviting, for the most part, people who are very very close to us), I will be under 150 which is where I want to be.

my min was 175 and we ended up with 250. it happens..I said 175 and really had no idea where I came up with that number. it's crazy.

ok im up again to 228
and i was thinking id only need to order 130 invites but now i think i might need more! not only will it cost us more money but i think my invitation vendor might have a stroke

I agree, I came up with 100 and said that's a good number. I didn't even have list. So I'm eating my words as for my FH he just smiles everytime I go the list.

Honestly don't even stress it. A similar thing happened to us. We initially wanted to keep it at 300 people (our minimum), but then the list kept growing and growing and we got up to 372! We invited all 372 and were hoping for 320. Well we ended up with exactly 300 people (on the nose). We also thought certain people would DEFINITELY come. They would talk to us about the wedding, had our save the dates and then last minute would say no. Also, things come up, like illnesses and other things unfortunately. I would definitely keep my list at at least 225 if I wanted 175 people.

Same thing happened to us, and I think it happens to most brides. Our room could only fit about 130-135 comfortably and we had a list of 190 (cut down from 200+ ) but we ended up at 134...thank goodness for FH's family from OOT saying no...I prayed everyday lol

I completely understand where you are coming from. I went through this when I did STD's. We have 266 people if everyone that has the option of a guest brings a guest. Not to mention that my mother just told me last night she wants to invite one more person and FH and I have a B-list going at this point.

Yes this definitely happened to us. We were at 250...then got it down to 220, then back up to 250, then 270, then 280 and last thing you know 298! YIKES! But we have a lot of OOTS so we are expecting a 33% no ratio.
But anyway, it was so annoying trying to cut people and in the end we added like 20-30 more! I feel your pain.

OMG you sound like me...... our RH they say holds 240 max capacity which I think would be a little tight. Anyway I said no problem we are inviting 200 and if we take off 20% as an approx that will say no we will wind up with 160 perfect. Right, then we decide to invite FH relatives from Sweden and since My cousin Maureen in London is bringing one of our cousins from Ireland as her date I thought.... I should invite the rest of our cousins from Ireland. These we sent about 2 weeks after the initial mailing of our STD. I have been scared to go back in and add all our European relatives to the excel spreadsheet to see the true number. I also started thinking of other people like so & so's parents I would love to invite and it is a scary spiral......... I can't live in denial as soon as i eat my turkey sandwich I am going to face it and add them on. wish me luck!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes! We wanted 150 and it got up to 240. How I dont know. So we cut it and ended up with 187!

We hadn't made our wedding guest list when we booked the hall we just based it on our engagement party list (only invited family and very very close friends and we had about 150 invited) so when we finally sat down and made a list...mind you we ordered our invites before we made the guest list....yea that was stupid...but ps...we had just enough with one remaining for us.
We invited 423 people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That happened and then we realized we had to cut it down. We wanted around 150 and invited 192 with the knowledge of at least 20 that we knew couldn't make it due to vacations or other events...so that brought it down to 172 and we knew that those wouldn't all be yes responses. Just make cuts...or else it will get nuts!
