Haggling on the Dress
Hi Ladies,I was curious if anyone has been successful in haggling on their dress. After trying on more than 10 dresses, I think I may have found the one
They wouldn't let me take a pic of the dress and the only info that I have is that it's by Maggie Sottero. I did some research and I I found a very similar Maggie dress for about $50 less at RK Bridal. I want to haggle on the dress but I don't know how to go about doing it. What do you all think?

Haggling on the Dress
I heard Maggie Sottero dress prices are set by the designer and the stores don't have much room to drop prices. The only time they discount Maggie dresses are for trunk shows.

Haggling on the Dress
I got my Maggie dress at Village Bridal in Babylon and they took off $200 from the sticker price. They ALL have wiggle room! Trust me.

I know several places will price match, but it probably needs to be the exact same dress and you probably need something in writing verifying the price you've seen.

Haggling on the Dress
I hate haggling, never been good at it, never liked it! On the other hand, FH is a great negotiator, though, and will haggle you out your pants.I always feel I'm taking food out someone's mouth. I wouldn't want my boss haggling me about lowering my salary. Why mess with other people's money? I like paying people what they're worth. If you want quality, you have to pay for it.

That's not necessarily true. Bridal stores jack up prices to begin with. I don't get what quality has to do with asking for a discount.
If I were you, I would politely make it clear that you like the dress but it is a little over your budget. You can also say that you found it at another store that is more local to you and they are willing to give you a discount. They most likely will match the price or give you a bigger discount just be really nice about it! There is nothing wrong with asking - I bargain with everyone and it always works.

Quality costs. I would never ask Preston Bailey to discount his prices, because I find value in his work. I also know if he's doing my event he'll use the finest flowers, materials, etc. All that cost, plus he has to make a living. Just like the bridal shop. They purchase the gowns and then have to mark-up so they can cover their cost and be able to pay their bills and pay their employees. I'm not saying asking for a discount is wrong or right. I'm just stating my opinion on why I don't like to haggle. Whether it be for a dress or photography. If I can't afford it, I find something else. *shrug*

I agree. I wouldn't lose the dress over a few hundred dollars, but saying something as simple as 'we'll, it's really a bit over budget' will give you a quick idea whether there's any room to negotiate.

Haggling on the Dress
The salon wouldn't give me the style name or let me take a picture of the dress. Is this normal? This is why I had to find the closest matching style that I could find on the Maggie site. And price compare from there

Re: Haggling on the Dress
Won't let you take a picture of a dress you're paying hundreds of dollars for? That sounds like bad business IMHO.

Haggling on the Dress
Salons won't let you take photos of the dress until you commit to buy. As with giving out style #'s they are sometimes secretive. I started questioning the designer as soon as I put it on, before I even took a good look at myself in the dress. Also, salons rip out the tag so you don't know the style number. I found the consultant never left me alone, probably bc I was comfortable changing in front of them.

then we would take a quick pic with my phone.

Haggling on the Dress
Kind of interesting thing I stumbled upon. Certain tags have to be kept in sample dresses by law:http://business.ftc.gov/documents/bus39-wedding-gown-labels-unveiling-requirements

so not true, in my teens i worked in a bridal store. they jack up dresses 15-20% for few reasons.
-trunk shows
-and it make a customer feel like they getting a discount.
also a lot of times dresses are getting close to go on sale to make room for new stock & they rather sell it for 200+ than 1,000 less in 1 month
im a really indecisive person found many vendors haggled themselves down fearing to lose a deal.
that's how my veil was reduced, i couldn't decided if i wanted to use my sisters two tier or buy the new one that was one tier. not going to lie, spending 350.00 wasn't helping my decision. but when she lowered it 150.00 it cleared things up lol

That's totally your business if you like to haggle or not. It actually works for the business since they would most likely give discounts to other brides so thanks lol

I'm not sure where you went for the dress but I bought my Maggie sottero dress at bridal reflections in massapequa and they allowed me to take pictures in my dress and runner ups as I was trying them on. Plus they took $ off the dress and they said I can have a discount on accessories. If you check them out, talk to Marylou. She is great!
