Has anyone been asked to do this....

Original post by JoJoD

My RH gave me a list of things that I need to bring with me the day that I make my final payment and one of the things on the list was the tip for the Maitre'd and bridal attendant! They want this a week before the wedding! I'm not doing it because they haven't performed their service yet - what if they are not good. And what if they base their performance on the tip?! Am I being unreasonable by refusing to do this??

no, i would tell them 'since when do people get tipped before they perform their duties'

ITA!!! No way would I give them a tip before the fact, that's really greedy!!!!!

That's what I thought! - They basically are asking to be tipped. I have never heard of such a request.

The Royalton asked for $500 (I think it was $500)for the tips. So it's not TOTALLY unheard of.
I can understand being annoied by it or questioning it though. If you feel totally uncomfortable with it then let them know and they should be willing to work something out with you.

I don't mind them suggesting what to tip - it's the tipping a week prior that i have a problem with.

Well.. no it's on my contract. it goes by a pp charge. So it has to be paid like the week before the wedding.

I'm not sure how these people are paid.. but I think I recall hearing that they ONLY make money based on TIPS for that day. Kind of like how a waitress works.... they get paid like $2 an hour and basically LIVE off of tips! most people just don't realize this.. so when you leave a very small tip or even worse no tip at all.. that person is literally not making anything! I used to work in a diner.. and my mother was a waitress for oh about 15 years. So I have a bit of a soft spot for people who live off of tips. I'm assuming that's why some places have started including it in their prices. It's definately why they charge a certain percentage for a tip at restaurants when there's a party over a certain number of people.

I understand your concern and where you are coming from... but maybe some of the background will help understand it a little better???

I also feel that if they are good they deserve a higher tip and if they are just so so they deserve a little less. I really wouldn't ever stiff anyone.. unless they REALLY did something wrong... so far has never happened. So with that being said... you are probably thinking well if I tip them before their services then how will I know what they deserve. But I think most places who ask you to tip beforehand.. only tack on the lowest amount of tip - so if they are stellar then you can give them a little extra.

We are actually dropping off our RH final payment and the tips a few days before the wedding, because we don't want to have to deal with so much money the day of the wedding. I plan on 'early-tipping' the bare minimum and bring a bit extra with me the day of to give to the maitre'd for good service.
