help - they wouldn't let me take my maiden name as...

my middle name. ???Went to Town of Hempstead Town Hall the other day and the woman said i could only take my husband's last name, keep my own or hyphenate...that's all. i wanted to take my maiden name as my middle name b/c i don't have one. i will not hyphenate it. has anyone done this or does anyone know if this is true????

I found this really helpful website: Bride Law . It sounds like you can change your name to whatever you want. I want to do the same thing (last name as middle name), so I hope that's true!

What I've been told is that in New York state, you can't automatically use your maiden name as your middle name. You have to go to court and get an official name change to do it that way.

I also had trouble with this. I ended up hyphenating, which I didn't really want to do, but there didn't seem to be any other choice. They told me I can go to court and change it at a later date. (sigh)

you can, just not when you get married. It has to be changed at a later date, like with any name change. Stinks, but it can be done!

Gee that's funny. I did exactly that and had no problem whatsoever.

Maybe because I did not have a middle name to begin with so it wasn't a problem to just move my maiden name over?

I had no problem at SS either, they took my maiden name and moved it right over to my middle, no questions asked.

i think you cant change change your name on your marriage certificate - changing your name gets down after you are married with the SS office and so forth.

The marriage certificate just determines your last name.
