Hey, people, ya know something!!!

Just because Bush was re-elected, that doesn't mean that Gays and Women are up shits creek. It just means that feminists groups nad gay groups have to work harder. I think changing your outlook and being a little optimisitc is better than the woe is us whining.

Get out there and make change. I feel bad for gay. I know they are looking for equality. They just have to get out there and anyone who agreeds with them. -----> me included.

Start a movement. Get involved. But sitting online and complaining won't get anyone anywhere. And start now, before the conservatives get their groove going.

The movement has been going on for decades.

Re: Hey, people, ya know something!!!

It's not over. It's just been knocked back a few decades. Meaning, all the work - everything that was accomplished - is in jeopardy of being overturned. OR, just shot down completely.

And why do these minority groups have to continually shed blood and tears when old, angry, white men just get to swagger all over the place...reaping the benefits of privelege??

Exactly. If Bubba puts more conservatives on the Surpreme court we're all in trouble.

Not all of us live in our own little bubble. Some of us may have relatives or friends who are gay. Some of us might actually care about other people and inequality...and some of us may just want to uphold the Constitution.

I'm curious why someone who isn't even engaged yet is posting on a wedding website.

Re: Hey, people, ya know something!!!

I smell defeat. Nothing has been overturned or shot down yet. (well, in 11 states it has, but there are still 39 more to go).

Seriously, if you beleive in something bad enough, you fight for it. It's like life. If something like an illness is killing you, and you really want to live, you've got to fight for it until the end.

I don't hear the fat lady singing yet.

*I am trying to help people be optimisitc, but I don't think it's working.*

I see what you're saying, Cuban.
While there are movements already ongoing, maybe yesterday's results will spur MORE people on to advocate for the rights of women and gays.

I may not myself be gay, but I have gay relatives and friends and I support them and their right to be happy and not have someone decide what is best for them.

Re: Hey, people, ya know something!!!

CubanBride,

I have to disagree. I mean this very respectfully but you are being very naive about the opportunities to get our voice heard, with this administation particularly in the area of civil rights (gay marriage included). One example-The NAACP and the Congressional Black Caucus worked very hard the last four years to get a regular audience with George Bush and somehow they couldn't. Regardless of how publicly he was chastised for this, it didn't move him to do much at all. In the meantime, the enforcement of protections offered by civil rights agencies in the federal government have eroded.

Given the Republican majority at all levels of government there is no compelling reason why he would be moved to protect the rights to legal partnership of gays. Particularly since he now knows that a majority of Americans voted for a President who wants a constitutional amendment to prevent gay marriage and number of states passed proposals banning it. He got the message loud and clear.

Gay rights, women's rights, protection from discrimination, he has no track record despite serious mobilization within these communities. But, I guess as long as we are safe from terrorism it doesn't matter that we voted to supoort a president who will not fight to protect the civil rights of fellow citizens, right?

Re: Hey, people, ya know something!!!

I think that it makes perfect sense for those of us that are in the process of planning or have planned our wedding to have discussions about why a particular group does not have the same freedom to do so.

Why do you have to be gay to sympathize or to be concerned about their rights? Why can't someone have enough empahty to see beyond their own experience?

Well, as naive as I may be, I was hoping that peopel would get off their asses and do something. But if not, then whatever.

BTW-GW doesn't make laws, he only signs them. You have to go to legislature for that. But whatever. Give up if that's what you want. The rest of us ave what we need.
