sorry if I took it the wrong way...public or private I don't care...but teachers are specialized workers...and I think that people who homeschool are not qualified - Its a lot more than having a workbook...why does all the research point to cooperative learning if students should do better learning on their own?

Re: Home school your children????
I would just like to add that I teach in a private school, and my students are severely lacking in social skills and social boundaries. I obviously cannot speak for other private schools, but this is the second one I have taught in and both sets of students are quite sheltered. It may have something to do with the small class sizes, my school only has 12 to a grade, and maybe it would be different if they were in a larger school that was still private, but I think that maybe private schools (and I say this because this happens at my school), they foster a sense of elitism in their students which in turn, hurts these students socially. I enjoy teaching in my school, and I love my students, but there are clear differences in their behavior and attitude from students in public schools. Again, this is just from my experiences. I'm not speakign for all private schools.

No way! First of all, I think I would need the break from my children once in a while, and while there are some parents out there who may be able to provide a good education to thier children at home, the vast majority are not teachers, and dont have a clue about how to teach all this material properly. There is a reason why teachers have a masters level education, and why they dont let someone with a high school diploma get in front of a class and teach. How do you fairly grade your own child? I know I could not sit here and teach a child a subject (especially math!), Ill leave that to the people that were educated for that! Hooray to all the teachers out there!

No....never. I think improving your social skills are just as important as having an education. Plus, who would want their kids home all day.

can you elaborate on this at all? i'm just wondering what exactly they do that makes them different from public school kids. i don't work with children at all so i have no frame of reference here and was just wondering if you could clarify. not at all meant to be atagonistic or anything. just wanted to make that clear since sometimes it's hard to tell on a message board :)

Re: Home school your children????
I don't mind clarifying, that was a very broad statement I made, but these are the differences I see: the students in private schools are much more likely to think that you are their equal, they have very little respect for you as their teacher, whereas the public school children that I teach have better boundaries between themselves and adults. My private school students don't even know the basics of the world around them, they don't know songs that other children sing (hello, the kids didn't know row, row, row your boat, they can't sing twinkle twinkle little star), they don't know how to interact with other children (they often sit and read at recess or do something alone rather than play games or play on the play ground.) They are much more dependent on you to tell them what to do, rather than thinking outside of the box a little. They do not seem to care about their education AT ALL. They take zero pride in their work, ALL of the teachers complain about how lazy they are. Now, I think that some of this ahs to do with maybe the parents and the teachers, but there are clear differences. My students that I teach that are in public schools seem to have a much more serious attitude about their education, they play sports, they have friends. Here's an example of what I find upsetting about the children in my school. I asked a few students randomly just out of curiosity, what they do when they get home from school and all of them answered either watch tv or read. I asked them if they play outside, NONE of them said yes, I asked them if they have friends in their neighborhood, NONE of them said yes, I asked them if they go to the park, NONE of them go to the park. I hope this elaborated a little. I will certainly go into more detail. But if you observe these children, you DEFINITELY notice the differences socially and academically.

hmmm... that's interesting. i wonder if the kids in pubic school feel like they need to work harder to be at the top of the heap and the kids in private school feel like they're already at the top b/c they go to an exclusive school and therefore don't need to work as hard. thanks for elaborating.

No problem. I'm no authority, by all means, I can only go on what I see. But I also teach at a private school that happens to pride itself on being 'elite', so I have to wonder if the school is breeding children with the attitude of not needing to work hard. It's a very fuzzy topic because you can disect it any way you'd like if you really think about it.

Re: Home school your children????
I voted maybe. I hate to say this but I fear having children in this area and in this time and age. Kids need interaction and all.. yeah.. fine.. join a club or a dozen. Ballet, Piano, Soccer, Summer Camp..whatever.
I had the shocking experience of hearing my 1st grader brother come home and say to his twin 'Shut the F**k up!'. I nearly DIED!
learned it from school
Worse was in 2nd grade he came home to say he was smarter than his brother (who has severe ADHD has major problems) because his brother was black and all blacks are slow and stupid.
That got us all freaked out. I mean, hello, they're twins. Neither is black but the MAJOR issue was he said this in front of my best friend who is. She was just as shocked. Major discussion after that. He didnt think she was stupid, just.. well.. he heard in school.
God for everytime I hear the words 'learned in school' i want to break someone.
The smaller one (the other twin) was told to piss off so many times.. he finally did. He pissed on a kid in the middle of the cafeteria and my brother was the one who got in trouble.
I have so many issues with the values they teach in public school.
If I had a endless bucket of money and time yes, I'd home school for the first years. Maybe let the child into private school in the late elementry years.
Everyone deserves the High School experience, good or bad. I just want more control on what my kids learn on those early years, the impressionable ones.
Since I ain't rich and pretty fouled mouth myself, I guess I'll have to deal with public schools. Which is why I keep thinking of moving away from NYC area. *shrug*
I have so many issues with the values they teach in public school.
Is it the school's job to each values? its very subjective and I would be extremeley upset if my child was taught religious values (someone's interpretation of what values should be taught)
I think that is a little unfair...values should be taught at home...

Re: Home school your children????
I was home schooled early in my education & I loved it. When I entered into a regular school program, I was way more advanced than the other children. I think it gave me an edge, but it was a little difficult being so far ahead of the curriculum.
I would consider it, but I would definately make certain my (future) child was involved in a social group of some sort, or in a group activity.

I went to a school that 90% of the kids were drug addicts. Had the highest percentage of teen pregnancies in the area and guess what I never did either. My parents told me it was wrong. Im not saying that either on of them are wrong or bad. What I am saying is that My parents taught me these Values.
I think Values should be taught in the home and leave it up to the schools to teach educational stuff.

Re: Home school your children????
I would personally never consider homeschooling for many of the reasons listed above. First and foremost, I do not feel qualified to teach all of the subjects that my children would need to learn.
Secondly, I think the interaction is so important for a child. Our new neighbors homeschool their chid. She is seven. Often when I am in the yard the little girl comes to the fence and talks to me. One time this past fall, I was out in the yard playing with my niece. The little girl started crying and I aksed her what was wrong. She said, 'I never get to leave this place, I never get to play with anyone.' I thought it was heartbreaking
That is only my experience, but in this instance that little girl clearly seems to be missing out.

My first and gut response is no, absolutely not. Like a lot of people have said, kids need school and the experience of socializing. Kids learn a lot from other kids (good and bad), not just the teachers. To deprive them of that would be detrimental. I understand how those who may live in a bad or rural area may want to homeschool, but I'm not so sure its a good idea to shelter kids from reality. IMO, if you shelther, they can't deal with it when they have to later as adults. You learn coping skills early.

Re: Home school your children????
Rachel, that's very interesting. My BIL is thirteen and in seventh grade at Our Lady of Victory and he fits your description to an absolute T. I always thought it was for two reasons: He gets an incredible amount of work-way, way more than I did in seventh grade and I was an honors student, he is not-and it seems like more than is given in public schools. He doesn't seem to have time to play. The other reason is that because he's in private school there isn't anyone on his block he goes to school with and therefore it's harder to play with friends after school. You would know more, though.

Re: Home school your children????
Ok.. allow me to correct myself
I don't think the schools TEACH values.. rather they have become a breeding ground for behavior and lack of values.
yes, I think values should be taught at home. I also feel its hard for parents to keep control on their children's values when the education environment is so saturated in values I disagree with.
To put it in an scenario.. If all public schools taught in a Catholic environment (Ie Mass and prayer times) then I'd feel the values I teach my child at home would be undermined by those at their schools.
I apologize. Other than BASIC educations, I think our schools don't teach our children diddly squat.
I grew up in a VERY rough neighborhood with a very poor school. I came out alright thanks to my father's upbringing. But I see my friends or peers from High School and it's sad. Our school had a drug problem, sure.. but not anywhere near what the richer schools had, we couldn't afford it. Rich kids came to our school to sell their drugs.
STILL I wish teachers and schools had more control over how they can 'teach' children. If I had to put my kid in a 'school' then oddly enough I'd pick a Catholic one. One where I may disagree with their ultimate beliefs but still at least the kids are running rabid.
Now.. do I think it's the school's responsiblity to raise my children? Hell no.. hence.. if I could.. YES, I'd home school.
ETA: school is NOT the only place for interaction and NOT always the best place for it anyway. Also like to add, I'd only do it for the first few years. Like I said before we all deserved our Senior Prom or that first Spring Dance. There are definately cultural and social benefits to the schooling system.
My point I guess is, I feel gipped by the system. I was an honors student who was bored out of her mind. They made a mistake and thought my bored attitude was because I was incapable of handling the work. They put into basic remedial courses where I started to seriously fail in my grades. It took YEARS before one (thankfully) bright teacher said 'this isn't right' and I got back into Honors.
I think the system is set the model of the law of large numbers. Not specific enough. I want my children to be educated at their own speed and level of absorbtion, not at that of the classroom. Those first few years are so important. I've seen children at the age of 3 do basic math and writing in cursive. I guess we all just want to give our children the best possible start we can. I don't think the basic public school system provides that type of teaching.
I would never home school my kids....I am the worlds WORST speller and I would be afraid that I would pass it on to them!!
I really wish I knew why I cant spell....its embarrasing sometimes!!
Lisa...i am an awful speller too...but did you know most geniuses are bad spellers....lol - I wish it were bad spellers were geniuses...but I can dream...lol
as for teaching material...how many have every taught? I was trained in upper grades...but out of desperation got a job teaching kindergarten in a Catholic school (read: uncertified teachers) and it was freaking hard...Do you know what letters most kids had trouble writing? a K...i couldn't understand this BECAUSE I AM NOT TRAINED IN ELEM ED!!!
What if your child had a learning diability...you would not know...B/C YOU ARE NOT TRAINED TO KNOW THE SIGNS!!! (like teachers are)
yes you can learn socializing skills elsewhere than schools, however how can you replicate the Piagetian theory of concrete operational skills when you have passed that stage 20-30 years ago??? adults know that that 1 cup of water is the same in a short fat container and in a thin tall container...you can not teach this...these are thought processes that can not be learned in camp or soccer...they are learned from students sitting next to each other when in math and they chat together...
