I just think about how bad I was my first year...and I was trained...how is a parent who is untrained going to learn and practice?

well the parents do have the advantage that it's their child and presumably they know that child well. and also they only have one child to deal with at a time (or maybe two or three). and keep in mind there are lots of resources out there for parents who are homeschooling their children b/c it's becoming more popular.

also keep in mind that most of us come from an area where the public school are wonderful and the teachers, for the most part, well trained and good at their jobs. but in many areas of the country that isn't true and in that case homeschooling may be better.

one other point is that homeschooling does not necessarily mean the parent is the teacher. many people hire tutors or make use of online correspondence classes (though that's only for older kids i think).

i also don't think it's the school's responsibility to teach values. it should be the parents, but again in many areas of the country this does not/can not happen. therefore i think teachers do have to shoulder some of the burden of instilling some basic moral guidelines into the kids e.g. don't beat up your classmates. it would be great if everyone learned these lessons at home, but they don't.

I agree with that completely.

As for K... In my district we teach D'nealian penmanship, and lower case K is very difficult because it looks exactly like a cursive k, which is very loopy and tough on kids with weak or developing fine motor skills.

I haven't noticed a large number of children having problems with capital K though. Very interestingg...

I'm a teacher and I would never home school my kids. I think in some circumstances it works, but aside from the lack of social interaction these kids will miss out on, teaching children is not so simple and you need to have training in it. You can't just pick up a book and teach. Parents who choose to home school their kids should be made to take courses in education and should be monitored more closely. I don't want to start anything here, because I do know some paretns would be wonderful teachers and it would be great.

A freind of mine's FH's ex-wife homeschools her child and doesn't care what she teaches her and sticks her infront of the TV 24/7. The child is in 3rd grade and can't even read or spell her name! My friend and her FH are now in a coustody battle with the mother b/c they don't think it's right to let this mother homeschool her child!

I voted no for all the reasons that have been stated!!! I think children need to be around other children and not for nothing but, the reason why teachers become certified and are able to teach is because they are trained in that profession and can teach our children PROPERLY. I could never teach Gianna at home by myself -- what the heck would she learn from me? She wouldn't learn how to speak properly that's for sure -- well Brooklynese, even though I'm from Queens)!!!

IMO these children that are taught at home are missing out on something, both socially and educationally!! (Is that even proper? See what I mean!!! )

I could agree with this more that parent home schooling (I know you mentioned this with athletes before - when I jumped on you )

My niece was petrified to go to HS this year (she was homeschooled up to 7th grade) b/c her mother told her that the minorities in the school were bad!!!! so maybe I am biased b/c my SIL is f*d up...and I think my niece could learn better values and morals from back street alleys...

I voted No. I feel that children need to socially interact with other kids. How will they ever learn to get along, share and have a real conversation with people in the real world. This is also a good way for kids to make friends. Is a child that is home schooled going to have many friends?? They make have some, but most likely friends are made in school in the early years.

I voted Maybe... Yabbo... I worked for 4 years as a substitute teachers Assistant for eastern Suffolk Boces. I also worked with Miller place SD... In my experience with these two VERY different schools and children, I found MANY similarities. I was going to school for teaching when I became pregnant and got married. I have since taken a hiatus. LisaRose.. I too am can be an awful speller!

I don't think that by someone sharing their opinion about raising and educating THEIR child is a slap in the face to the educators and school workers on this board. I feel that your closed mindedness is naiive. All homeschool teachers are not just Moms. Some used to be teachers, or felt a calling to teach, and decided to teach those who were most important in their lives.. THEIR kids. Their is a Homeschoolong group on Long Island... LEAH ... And many homeschool 'teachers' take workshops... just like the 'teachers' in schools. Many, many workshops and videos and classes are available to homeschool teachers. Believe it or not they even have conventions like LICOP and the United Teachers...

My neighbor is a homeschool mom... She is the proud mother and strict teacher of 5 children, her oldest just turned 21 and the youngest just 5. The 21 year old is the youngest RN in Suffolk County and is continuing her education at StonyBrook and the 18 year old is up at ELIM bible institute studying to be a missionary and possibly a teacher. The next youngest is VERY active in sports, baseball his favorite, even umping to make extra cash. The 11 year old is a great violinist and enjoys softball and will be taking up gymnastics this winter.. Not to mention she is GREAT with children. The five year old is just in Kindergarten and LOVES math and spelling, can move at his own pace and is not pressured or held back by other kids. If he wants to wear a spiderman outfit to recess he can and won't get made fun of. All of them have friends in the neighborhood as well as throught NY because of LEAH, and some even have friends out of state because of Homeshooling confrences. The enormous opportunities that are opened to homeschooling families are priceless and truly reflect the TRUE value of Family.

None of the children feel neglected or as an outcast. No one is pulling their pigtails on the playground or beating them up. They know what drugs are, the older ones have been offered it. But they were raised correctly. Am I saying that Public or private school kids can't be raised correctly.. No I am not. I am just saying that you shouldn't close your mind to something that could genuinely benefit a large amount of students.

As an 'educated' teacher you should recognize the fact that there are a ton of children out there that DO need that extra one-on-one time or should be excelling but can't because the class is holding them back. You should be courteous and respectful of the people that are brave enough to share the best of what God gave them to their children, and devote their ENTIRE life to their kids. I did as a professional in the educational field.

I just feel that the way you worded your arguement made anyone out there that was even contemplating Homeschooling feel inferior. That is the purpose for my arguement. JMO though!

If anyone is interested in the possiblity of homeschooling, my neighbor is one of the leaders of this chapter of LEAH. I can FM you their contact info.

If that is the case...then look at your wording...you called me Naiive...but I am the ONLY poster on this thread to actually bring in facts...You should look into the work of Jean Piaget. MY POINT was that children are at different mental levels and need to interact on an ACADEMIC level with children of their own age...

I can forward you my CV/resume if you would like to play the who is morequalified to have an opinion game.

My husband is very trained in gun use...he is a member of the NRA (much to my chagrin)...so I guess he should become a vigilante...to help out where the police department fails...

or when the fire department tells me to evacuate my house b/c a wild fire that has destroyed 500,000 acres...I am qualified to stay and put it out...b/c I have a hose and water my garden...

I still maintain that some of the comments are insulting to teachers...thats not being naiive...thats my opinion...I actually worked in a student services office and saw how school districts regulate home schooled children...so I do feel I can professionally add my opinion...

for parents who are worried about their child getting individual treatment - my advice is to stay in close contact with the classroom teacher...this is a well known tactic for parents...my more contact you have the more your child is taken care of....

For homeschooling parents (and I have already mentioned that I am not as against the 'guilds' that have been created) I believe it is extremeley arrogant that they think they can master all subjects and all grade levels...when it takes teachers 6 years of schooling AND a career to do it...
