I voted no. In my opinion, children need to be out with other children there age. I feel that that is also part of the learning process.

JMO of course!

I wouldn't. I really think that kids need to socialize with other kids.

Maybe!

However my main concern would be social skills... I'd have to find a way for my children to interact on a daily basis (at least 5 days a week) with a large group of other children. No clue what I'll end up doing since I'm not even TTC yet!

no way.... school is such a great experience and how will they learn to interact with society by being at home all the time?

absolutely not!!! kids need other kids....period.

obviously, that's jmo, but I feel very strongly about this.....

My friend's SIL home schools her kids. I think there are a group of mothers in her area who do it together so the children do socialize with other kids.

I personally wouldn't do it though.

Kids need to interact with others and learn how to be social.

I voted no also. JMO My daughter loves school!! All the different expierences and learning in a way I know I wouldn't be able to teach her at home...I would never take her out of that environment. I also believe kids need to be with other kids and learn social as well as educational aspects from school.

When I was in HS I babysat for kids who were home-schooled. They were vbeery active in their church so they interacted with other children there. When they reached HS age they went to private HS, but I always wondered what the adjustment was like for them. The oldest is a junior in college and the younger one is a senior in HS now, they seem like pretty well-adjusted kids but I personally wouldn't do it.

my SIL homeschooled my niece and nephew until they were in 3rd/7th grade - she did it, b/c they are in a rural area and she got involved in drugs and got PG in HS...and didn't want her kids to get into trouble...but they have to make their own mistakes...you can only protect them so much...

here are my issues:
She was not trained...she only had a HS diploma (and the way she talks about her HS career...i don't think she studied too much) - yes you can read up on theory...but there is more to being a teacher than just knowing information...there is a lot of psychology involved...

they were involved in sports so yes they did socialize...BUT

kids are on different developmental levels than adults...they need to be with kids in class...who might explain something in the terms of that specific age level...

If you do any study on Piaget's developmental stages...it says it all...

I teach a few flute students who are home schooled and they are definitely lacking social skills, AND they do get together with other home schooled children, but I notice even in my private school that when you seclude small groups of children, they are more often than not socially awkward, so I would say no to home schooling.

think about all the crushes you had in elem school...and the lunch lady...and the assemblies...and SNOW days...

how could you deny a child these things!!!

Re: Home school your children????

under certain circumstances i might homeschool my child, but i'd prefer not to do it myself but have them do correspondence courses or something. those circumstances would be if my child was an elite athlete of some sort. many figure skaters, gymnasts etc are homeschooled and are very well adjusted people b/c they interact with kids at training. i honestly think though that attending public school is highly overrated.

I'm sorry but thats a slap in the face to all the teachers and school employees on this board...

It is a lot of work and study to become a teacher...and for people to think anyone can do it - is rediculous

absolutely not. like everyone else said - school is more than just reading, writing and arithmetic.

Re: Home school your children????

that's not at all what i said yabbobay. i never said anywhere that i think being a teacher is overrated or that anyone can do it. i said that i think attending public school is overrated and by that i meant that there are other ways for kids to socialize and get those sort of real life skills than in school. i just think that some people here think not going to public school is the worst thing you could do for your child and i don't agree with that. there are plenty of benefits a child can reap from not going to a public school. and that's all i meant. geez.....

It is so funny that you say that...I went to HS with my friend's SIL that home schools her kids - if she showed up 3 days a week that was good, didn't go to college. She didn't have her children vaccinated either though, so she's on a completely different wavelength than most of the moms I know.
