How did you find out about...

your ring's carat weight (and other specs)?

Did you ask?
Did he tell you with out you asking?
Did you pick it out/design it, therefore knew ahead of time?

If you have other pieces of jewelry, do you know the specs on them?

Re: How did you find out about...

I have no shame, I asked! I knew it was bigger than one carat, that's the only reason why I asked.

Re: How did you find out about...

We went shopping together, so I had a general idea. For insurance purposes, I had to have a copy of the gemologists' report, which lists all of the specs.

Re: How did you find out about...

he showed me the gemologists report after we got back from the trip (on which he proposed). I was asking questions, not necessarily about size and stuff but about how he picked the stone and whatnot.

Re: How did you find out about...

the certificate from Gemology institute that came with the ring has all of the details & then we had it appraised again to insure it, that paper has the details too.

I asked! I also needed an appraisal when I got it insured, so he couldn't really keep it from me anyway.

Re: How did you find out about...

I designed my ring and worked with the jeweler to get all the specs I wanted. I keep all the paperwork and certificates for the insurance company.

FH, who likes to take what he considers the 'traditional' and mindless route would have just gone straight to Tiffanys and presented me with a round solitaire.
COMPLETELY not what I would ever want for myself.

It took 3 weeks to find a diamond that I was satisfied with and 2 weeks to come up with a custom setting. (think 10 e-mail/day back and forth to this guy in Memphis, with pic after pic after pic of all these different elements I wanted and then changed my mind on and then changed my mind AGAIN on...)

After the design process was over and the setting was finalized and agreed upon, FH e-mailed the jeweler and told him that under no circumstances was I allowed to see any pics of the finished ring.
THAT was torture, because it took another 4 weeks for the setting to be completed.
So I knew, in concept, what I wanted it to look like. I was still totally blown away at how perfect it was when I finally saw the real thing.

Re: How did you find out about...

Scott and I looked at e-rings once and I tried on a bunch. I knew I wanted an oval and the rule was 'I would rather have quality than quanity' So when he was ready he went all by himself and picked out the stone and setting. The day I got it he gave me the paperwork and told me all about his 'big day' and making the decisions etc...

Re: How did you find out about...

We went to see our jeweler over the summer so my fi and the jeweler could get an idea of what I liked. I always knew I wanted oval and I fell in love with a stunning 2.01 carat colorless, collection quality oval that the jeweler showed us. Turns out that my fi went back a week later and bought it. That was August, when he proposed last week, he asked if the diamond looked familiar and I knew it was the same one I had fallen in love with! I want to frame the GIA cert!

Re: How did you find out about...

My dad knows alot about diamonds and he taught me, so when FH went with dad for the ring, they made sure to pick me out the best quality diamond. I told John before hand what I wanted and he couldn't have done a better job, in color, cut, clarity or the setting!

Re: How did you find out about...

We also asked and it came with all the specs. The size didn't matter to me as much as the quality, there were some yellow rings out there and you really can't tell until it is next to a higher quality diamond, so be careful all of you future brides.

Re: How did you find out about...

I might be one of the few who has no idea about my ring - except that it is old and a family heirloom. It belonged to my hubby's grandmother, so my FIL tell me it was appraised and insured when he had it after she died, and the only thing he can really tell me without getting the paperwork is that it's about 1.75 carats. It's round and in a four prong setting. We are looking to add my rings to our homeowners insurance so we'll be getting it appraised after the holidays. To me it doesn't really matter, that's why I haven't pushed it yet - we got engaged in December 2000.
