How Did You Pick Your Colors?

Original post by 2009Bride2Be

I was curious how you decided on colors for the bridesmaid dresses? Im VERY torn right now and not sure what to do. Everyone tells me (all my non married friends LOL) to step back from it and it will come to me but as you guys know I cant do that. Im obsessed with it! LOL I keep researching and researching but I cant put my finger on the colors I want. I want these colors to be the theme for the evening.

I am torn between 2 total opposites. So I was just curious how did you guys decide on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Re: How Did You Pick Your Colors?

I just wanted something different and went w/ a black and white theme. I went to a wedding where the BM's wore black dresses and I thought they were beautiful. I had to wear a florescent pink dress for my sister's wedding and wished I was wearing black instead....so that's what I did for my girls.

You girls are making me feel much better about wanting black BM dresses!

Here's my one concern: I love this Watters dress. It looks great on my girls. My concern is what the fabric would look like in black. It is luminescent taffeta and I'm wondering if that extra sheen on the black will add a nice touch to it, or make it look a little 'witchy'.. what are your thoughts?

I was torn between brown or gray. I wanted something neutral. And I wanted dresses the BMs could wear again. And I wanted a color that I wouldnt look back on in ten years and wonder what I was thinking! LOL. I let my BMs decide between the two and brown won.

I went a similar route- I wanted something light and fun some thing that marked a new beginning so I did a Sunrise color scheme-

Light yellows, bright oranges and bright pinks. I think it meshed well

Here's some pics of the diff things incl those colors:

I knew I wanted a dark color because I like how dark colors photograph. I did a burgandy wine color, but also considered purples, and navy.

My wedding was in the summer so I guess I didnt do a traditional color but I didnt care!

Why dont you just keep looking at other brides pictures and see what stands out the most to you.

Or start a thread asking brides to post pro pics of bridesmaid dresses.

These were my dresses in black.

Dress on right

I ordered black and white chair covers; had black table runners that mom made and had white flowers. Bought chunky black jewelry for the girls. Told them to wear any black shoes----which they appreciated bc they didn't have to buy special shoes.

It didn't look like a funeral at all!

Re: How Did You Pick Your Colors?

I think most brides go by the Season in which they are getting married. When I was younger (before I ever met FH) I had always just assumed that I would have cute Yellow dresses for my BMs because i love the sunny, cheerful feel of it. HOWEVER, when we decided upon a Winter/Christmas Wedding, that just seemed ridiculous to do. I went back & forth for the longest time over this!!!! I LOVE the color green, not so much the color Red. However, when it came to the actual DRESSES, that just looked like crap. And i did NOT want a tacky red/green christmas mix. So I was basically deciding between a mix of Red & Silver or Red & Black. Ahhh, it drove me CRAZY!! Finally I settled on JUST red with white sashes for the Maids of Honor.

So I hear ya on being driven crazy with this choice. It IS a big deal, because the colors kinda make the night in a way. Pick a tacky color and the BP just looks tacky all together.

Just figure out the season, what colors go with it and pick your favorite. Check out the exact style dress you want and find out which colors are available in it. That should help make your decision final (once you actually SEE it on a gown rather than just the color itself floating around in your head).

Re: How Did You Pick Your Colors?

Honestly, He proposed... I said yes... and ten minutes later the color popped into my head! ROYAL BLUE! I always knew I would get married in the fall or winter months... so with that I just felt like Royal Blue was the right color. We are doing a winter wonderland them... all royal blue and white. I love the red colors too.. but I see it a lot now...and I wanted it to be a little different so a nice alternative for me was royal blue. I went to some places and saw a lot of reds and greens in the decor and since that didn't match my theme I didn't even book them.

I think you have to take into account what time of year you are getting married in... then start to think of the place you booked and what might look good there... along with what flowers you like. Once you get a little bit of a theme going... then you will know which color is right for you. Really though... almost any color can work as long as it ties into everything else. If you are having trouble... perhaps you should go with the color that's easier to match to other colors for flowers and CP's etc.

Also, if you have a favorite color but don't want to use that as the BM dress... you could use that as an accent color or flower colors and just pick another color that matches your favorite color for the BM dresses.

Re: How Did You Pick Your Colors?

Our colors are yellow and green (light celadonish green)...my favorite flowers are yellow roses so I knew I had to have that color. I thought that the light green looked really beautiful with it so that was that! I found a beautiful dress by jordan in a color called kiwi...it's in my album. All the girls look fantastic in it so I guess I lucked out!!

But I hear what you're saying because before we got engaged I went back and forth about what I thought I would want for colors. Once we were engaged, it all seemed like it fell into place....just knew I had to have tons of yellow roses.

I always wanted pink and then my FMIL passed away. She was wearing sage to our wedding, so I decided to do my MOH and matron in pink and my Bms in sage in memory of her.

My color was my very favorite for a long time and I picked the accent color based on a flower girl dress I saw.
