How different is your family V. FH/DH family?

Ours couldn't be more different....

My parents are still married, his divorced 20 years ago...

My parents had no $$, his had PLENTY

It was just me and my sister, it was him, 2 bros and 1 sis

We had tons of rules, they had none

We grew up in the city, they grew up on LI

And plenty more, I am sure.....
I am SO scared of when they meet!!

Re: How different is your family V. FH/DH family?

can you say total opposites??
My family is very strict and conservative, and just don't understand that things have changed since the early 70's!!!
his are more liberal on live on planet Earth.
BUT suprisingly- when they met, they had lots to talk about (both mom's are teachers, both dads like to build stuff) so it was OK.
Don't worry- you might be plesantly surprised!!

Re: How different is your family V. FH/DH family?

Our parents are from different planets:

My parents are college educated professionals; My parents both still work.
His parents are off-the boat; his father worked 35 years while his mom satyed home.

My parents love to travel and his parents don't Before me my DH never went on a vacation. I took him to Disney World for the first time when he was 22.

There are so many things that are different. My Dh and I have come to the agreement that we will never be able to have our families in the same room.

My family is very AMERICAN, very QUEENS (not a bad thing)... We are a loud bunch!

His family is very EUROPEAN. His parents are straight from Croatia. Although, lol, they are loud too! haha!

Re: How different is your family V. FH/DH family?

He is one of 7, there's just me & my sis.
My parents divorced 13 years ago, his are still together.
His family is more traditional (and will try to push their opinions on us) whereas my family respects that I'm not and leaves it at that. That could also be because I haven't lived at 'home' in 13 years whereas my FH moved out just 4 years ago (to move in with me).

Re: How different is your family V. FH/DH family?

The biggest difference is he is an only child with a small family and I am one of 4 with a HUGE family.

It was a bit shocking for him at the beginning but now he is used to it

Re: How different is your family V. FH/DH family?

Uh....my mom is a yellow-dog liberal Democrat who thinks Bill Clinton is (STILL) the greatest thing since sliced bread. She is a Southern Belle who does her makeup everyday, keeps her nails and hair up nice...

FH's parents are SUPER conservative, don't travel, are a typical blue-collar Irish Catholic clan from LI, his mother is much more tomboyish than mine

and they get along AWESOME which was a total shock to all of us. The 3 of them (my dad died in 1999) are tight as can be. It's nice.

Re: How different is your family V. FH/DH family?

OMG or parents are sooo diferent.

My parents are divorced. They had a very nasty divorce for that matter too. My dad has been married 3 times since then and is know seeing someone new. My mom never re-married.

Yes his parents are divorced but they are still like best friends and both have remarried and they act like normal people near each other unlike mine.

Also my parents are hippish and his are straight off the boat from Ireland and very true to their culture were as my parents are both half Italian and half irish and pick and choose what they want to be when it is convient for them.
I could go on and on...

Re: How different is your family V. FH/DH family?

TOTALLY OPPOSITE!!!

My parents are conservative (think his parents in My big fat greek wedding) they have helped me in anyway they could (even though they drive me insane sometimes) they have helped me with school so I don't have loans, taken me on vacations with them all over the world etc. and they have been married 33 years.

His parents are divorced for 21 years now. FFIL and FSMIL really don't do anything for him - but often just give him grief. He does not feel that they support him - in fact for example - they would bring FBIL and family or FSMIL's neice to their summer home often but NOT take FH because he had to work to pay his tuition since they did not help him - and they would tell him - oh too bad but you have to work - unless you don't want to go to school - but they would give FBIL money to counter the fact he took off from work to go with them - but never offered that to FH (so he tells me).
They are also very crass - i.e FFIL is going to see jerry springer - and he tells FH he wants to MOON the crowd - ok at 62 can we get a life - they could not be more opposite then my family and they don't get alone - it didn't help that FSMIL made digs about me to my mother

Re: How different is your family V. FH/DH family?

They're different and they're not...my own parents are complete opposites from each other though, so its more like my Dad and FH's parents are worlds apart...my dad is quiet, reserved, downright rigid at times, extremely organized and some would say cold (not me though, I'm still his baby girl!) FH's mom is LOUD, a 'mom' in every sense, yells at everyone she considers one of her kids and completely disorganized.

Re: How different is your family V. FH/DH family?

Ours are similar in some ways but different in alot. They get along well thank goodness. But my parents grew up in Brooklyn, taking the bus to school and taught us not to be afraid of anything. They are pretty laid back and are not showy at all. They like to hang out, go to casual dinners, etc...

His parents tried to keep him and his bro and sister in a bubble. His mother is a control freak and likes to butt into their lives so badly. His dad is actually laid-back- more than my parents. But they love to go on vacation, buy fancy cars, do to fancy dinners.....

Re: How different is your family V. FH/DH family?

Where do I begin...
My family is loud, outgoing, partiers, drinkers, will talk about sex, drugs, and anything else that comes to mind in front of the younger members (18+ range), and overall we are close. My family is also very young. My parents are in their low 50's. So they still party every other weekend.
Both of my parents work.
I can count on my bratty sister for anything and she can with me.
We keep contact with our aunts, cousins, and everyone else that live in the states, South America, Europe, Canada and St. Thomas.
We would travel ALL the time when we were younger. My father made it point to take us away on vacations.
We are more healthy and are more fit than his family.

FH's family on the other hand...
Are flat out boring!!
The only place he ever visited was Aruba and that was b/c his family lives there. He went to Disney World for the first time with me. I had visited 4x before we met.
His sister is a BEATCH and FH doesn't speak to her. Obviously, neither do I.
His parents are in their 70s and late 60s so they sleep early. Hence no partying like my nutty family. They are also retired.
They eat very fatty foods.
Forget about drinking or GOD forbid smoke a cigarette anywhere near the family.
FH is 27 years old and still sneaks a cigarette when his family has a gtg. You know how many times I have gotten wasted in front of my parents??? The night of our e-party FH's mom tells him: I see you are drinking alot. HELLO I drank twice as much as he did and my parents said zippo to me. All my father told me when we were dancing was you stink! But I am glad you are having a good time.
FH doesn't keep contact with his cousins or aunts. Unless there is a gtg.

I can go on for days...

Re: How different is your family V. FH/DH family?

Actually, our families are similar in that:

Our moms were born in the same year.

Our dads were born in the same year.

Our parents got married around the same time, give or take a few years.

We both have older brothers who are about the same age (I think his is a year older than mine)

Both of our brothers are dramarama first-borns who give our families grief.

Both of our families are Catholic.

Both of our mothers lost their fathers at a young age (my maternal grandfather died when my mom was 8, FH's maternal grandfather left the family)

Our differences are that:

I was born and raised on LI and I still live in the same house I was brought home to in 1976.

FH was born and raised in Poland and moved here in 1990.

My mom is college educated, but my dad is a blue collar worker (life was his school)

FH's parents are both college educated and were both civil engineers in Poland.

My family doesn't really scream at one another unless it is a really big deal.

FH's family screams about everything (they think it is healthier to get it out and move on)

My mother battles her weight. My dad is a letter carrier, so he walks all day and is great shape.

FH's mother is thin, naturally. FH's father has battled weight since childhood. He's a big guy. 6'3 and BIG

Somehow as I am writing this I am thinking of how much we really do have in common.
