How do I tell people 'No' tactfully when...

How do I tell people 'No' tactfully when...

they ask to try on my engagement ring???

It's probably silly but I've had a few people recently ask to try on my ring. I'm a little superstitious and was always told not to let other people try on your ring. BUT... I always feel funny saying no. Doesthis bother anybody else or am I being totally rediculous??

No one has actually asked me to try on my ring... they usually just look!

BUT my FH showed the ring to my mom and my sister about a month before and they both TRIED it on FIRST!

If you don't want anyone to try it on, you could joke that it's bad luck or something...

What I have never had anyone ask me to try on my ring and I would never ask to try on anyone elses. I don't think you need to worry about being tactful when they are being openly rude by asking such an absurd thing JUST SAY NO

I would just say that it's bad luck and you would rather not risk it!!

That is kinda weird!!! My mom tried mine on, dont know why, but that didn't bother. Anyone else, and they would get a big fat NO.

A lot of peope have asked to tr on my ring.. even people who are already married withtheir own rings.. The truth is that its bad luck to have anyone but the groom put the ring on his finger until after the wedding.. so there ya go just tell them its bad luck!! thats what i do and it works.

oh my goodness! this happened to me the day after I got engaged!! I didn't know what to do so I let her. then she asked again a few weeks later and I told her no. I never thought people would ask. Then another girl asked so I let her (I'm a coward) and then when she asked again I told her that I no longer took it off!!! I couldn't imagine asking that!!!!

My mom is the only one who asked to try it on and I laughed and said 'no way!' I remember being offered by a few people to try on their engagement ring just to see how the size fit and I felt super uncomfortable, so I can't imagine feeling comfortable about anyone else wearing it. I've waited long enough to have the ring on my finger and I'm not sharing it!

Everyone asks me to try my ring on
I mean, as soon as I show it to them, 'Oh my god, can I try that on' or they just try and rip it off of my hand.
I usually let my close friends only, but never on the same hand that I wear it and someone always told me when you put it back on, just turn it towards your heart before you put it back on your finger.

I can't believe that! My sister has tried my ring on because I wanted to see how it looked on someone elses hand. How about no you can not try on my because it would be weird!

forget tactfullness! I say no very clearly. I figure if they have the nerve to ask me such a thing then they are strong enough to handle my response! I would never ask to try on someone's ring and I am seriously unnerved when asked.
I state simply - no.
The response I get is usually 'oh, Ok' and then subject is changed.

That is very strange. The only person who asked me to try it on was the little girl I babysit for, who is really annoying and probably would refuse to give it back, or some how manage to loose it. So I told her it coudn't come off my finger it took special tools to take it off. Hey if they are dumb enough to ask maybe they would believe this one too.

Re: How do I tell people 'No' tactfully when...

omg i thought i was the only one. so many people ask me to try it on (especially when we first got engaged and people were seeing it for the first time). and when i say so many people i mean everyone from FH's family (aunts, cousins) to complete strangers (a bartender at a bar that was serving us once)... i mean, BAD!!!!

i felt bad before and i would say OK and let them (reluctantly) and my FH would go nuts and he hated it. but at the same time i was like hey, most of the people are YOUR family members and i don't feel comfortable telling them to stop (my family, i would but not his) so i'm like if it bothers you that much than you say something!

luckily, my finger is extremely small (just over a size four) and it won't even fit over most people's top part of their finger.. so i just say well, i wouldn't mind (LIE) but my finger is only a size four so i dont think it would even come close to fitting on your finger... and for some reason they are too afraid to try it and have it not fit (maybe it makes them feel fat? IDK) so they shy away and say, oh OK nevermind then!

maybe you could try that if your finger is small? otherwise i would just say how you feel 'oh thank you but i'm rather supersticious and i have not taken it off hardly ever since FH proposed so i'd rather not'...

it's a tuff one tho, i don't know why people do that-- it's so RUDE and i could never imagine myself EVER doing that (i've seen some gorgeous rings that i would love to try on but i don't ASK!!!)... i never thought anyone would do that until i got engaged and it happened to me and i had never even witnessed or heard of it before... sorry!!

YES omg-- they just assume!!! and go to pry it off your finger!! that happened to me with FH's aunt and then she asked me how big it was!!! i was so uncomfortable and didn't know what to do-- omg i almost forgot about that, it was about 8-9 months ago!!

Re: How do I tell people 'No' tactfully when...

Only 2 ppl tried on my ring - and they are 2 of my close freinds - I never knew it was bad luck and I was comfortable with them trying it on (and they tried it on like mths after I got it - when we were alone - not in front of their BF's or anyone else.)

I wouldnt want anyone else to try it on - and i would just say that Im superstitous and I believe its bad luck.
