How do you communicate that you prefer cash wedding gifts?

Original post by Bridex100

FH and I just bought a house, are paying for the majority of the wedding ourselves, are paying for our honeymoon to Tahiti/Bora Bora, AND I need to buy a car since I've been living in Manhattan. We would really prefer cash gifts to help alleviate some of the financial burden.

We sent out invitations and guests are already asking where we are registered.

What's the best response to say we prefer cash?

'We are not registered anywhere.'
'We prefer cash to help pay for our new house.'
'Cash would be appreciated.'

Suggestions???

You can't. It's tacky and rude.

But you could sign up for one of those online registry things that accept cash gifts instead of being able to buy presents. You kind of set up a few big 'gifts' like your honeymoon, new car, house, etc. and then people give monetary gifts toward which ever one they choose.... the money all goes into an account for you, and when you send your invites for various things, you can put on the bottom 'we are registered at www.insertnameofwebsitehere.com'

I remember there being posts about these sites a while back, maybe you could find that thread, or search for wedding registry or something on google

I have been living on my own since I went to college. FH has his own place as do I. We are the type of people who just buy whatever we need/want at the time.

It was rather difficult for me to even register for the bridal shower.

I am getting pressure from my bridal party to add more. I can't think of anything else that we need!

Add some gift cards to you registry.....

I know what you're saying--my FH and I are both 40 years old and have been living together for more than a year. We don't *need* much. That said, I still found plenty of things to put on my registry. I wanted new flatware, and plenty of baking things, and he wants good kitchen knives, and a cool expensive garbage can, etc. And as everyone keeps saying, around here, you get the registry stuff for your shower, and cash for the wedding. Mostly. So put lots of inexpensive but fun stuff on there for your shower, and a few more expensive things for those who want to give presents. How about a Roomba? Camping equipment? Sports equipment? A new DVD recorder? You can register for anything these days. We're registered on Amazon, and you can register for anything on their site.

you dont. Gifts are never suppose to be expected. And telling (or hinting) to your guests what you'd like to receive is a big no-no. Most people will give cash/checks anyway, but if you get a few gifts, you'll just have to return them.

I wouldn't be so bold as to tell them directly but instead I would register like normal but just not register for many products. . . .I would assume that if people don't wanna choose from a small list or if everything gets bought already that they'll give you money (like for the bridal shower anyway).

We didn't get any 'gifts' for the actual wedding, it was all money. People generally like to give gifts at a shower though. I don't think it is polite to request cash. You can have your close family and friends hint it to others but that is as close as I woud go to requesting cash.

The whole point of a bridal shower is to 'shower' the bride with gifts for her new home as a married couple. The main part of the shower is opening up all of the gifts and the 'ooooh-ing and aaaaah-ing.' If there are no gifts to open at a shower, then what is it's purpose?

You can't. Most people will give you checks anyway, but some people like to give gifts and that is just the way the cookie crumbles. I would add things to your registry above the $50 range, create a registry at BBB and then just return for cash.

I already registered for a lot of small items for the bridal shower.

I would just indicate that you are not registered anywhere. It is kind of tacky to straight out ask your guests for cash. JMO

I agree.

Register for larger items- or more $$$ items you might not buy yourself-fancy bowls-crystal-china-etc...IF you don't want it , return it and get the $$$ back (from BB&B)

are you expecting people to come to your wedding with boxed gifts? If you don't have many OOT guests I wouldn't worry about it, most people give money for the wedding... We did not get any boxed gifts at the wedding at all- and we did have many oot guests as well

Everyone knows a wedding is a gift giving occasion, but to expect people to give cash b/c that's what YOU want, makes it seem like you're having the wedding as a fund raiser. Why not just sell tickets to the wedding? Sometimes when gifts are involved, we lose sight of what it's about- spending your life with your FH.

It was my bad for starting the thread. The reaction is always the same when a bride posts anything related to an expectation of a wedding gift. I should have known better.

Whenever I attend a wedding, I always give enough to cover our plates plus an additional gift. We don't expect anything close to what I normally give.

From this thread, I've already decided that I wont be communicating that we prefer cash.

Honestly, I have to say asking outright for cash is tacky. Extremely tacky. Unless you are having people who totally know you and would therefore know you aren't trying to be rude, I would nix the idea because it could backfire on you and you'd get less cash or worse gifts.

What you CAN do (which I still find questionable but which is gaining popularity) is to set up a wishing well on day of wedding by the card table. Inside invites before hand, include a brief note, with a cute little poem asking for money in a cutesy way that’s not offensive. People may still think its tacky but I think they’d be far less offended because its “optional.” It becomes funny and whimsical, not all 'hand over the cash! I have bills to pay!'

[L=Invitation Script 7
This wishing well is here today for family and friends. Take an
envelope, make a wish and please drop it in. As it falls into the
well your wish, for the couple, will come true. A token for the
couple, to help them begin, will be welcomed, too. Please take the
time to make a wish before the day is through.[/L]

WISHING WELLS-asking for money politely!

Here are a few right off hand I thought were kind of cute.

Invitation Script 3
Invitation Script 3
They have their dishes and towels for two
They have pots and pans and oven mitts too
So what do you get for the Bride & Groom
Whose house is setup in every room?
Their house needs repairs and some upgrades too
But you can not register for carpet and glue.
A well that holds wishes is the way to go
So lets make it easy for all that know.
An envelope will be provided for those who have room,
To give a monetary wish to the Bride and Groom
A wishing well will be on display at the reception hall
To attach your wishes, for the couple, with love from all.

Invitation Script 9
Invitation Script 9
Our home is quite complete now,
we've been together long,
so please consider our request and do not take us wrong.
A delicate request it is, we hope you understand.
Please play along as it will give our married life a hand.
The tradition of the wishing well is one that's known by all.
Go to the well, toss in a coin and as the coin does fall,
Make a wish upon that coin and careful as you do.
Cause as the well's tradition goes your wishes will come true.
So on this special day of ours, the day that we'll be wed.
Don't hunt for special gifts but give money in it's stead.
And as you drop the envelope with money great and small,
Remember, make your wish as you watch your money fall.

[L=Invitation Script 6
Soon you will hear our wedding bell,
As Friends and family wish us well.
Our household thoughts are not brand new,
We have twice the things we need for two.
Since we have our share of dishes and bedding,
We're having instead a wishing well wedding.
But more important we ask of you,
your prayers of love and blessings too![/L]

Invitation Script 13
Invitation Script 13
To save you looking, shopping or buying.
Here is an idea, we hope you like trying.
Come to our wedding, to wish us both well.
And bring this small sack, to throw in our wishing well.
Fill it with paper all colours will do, gold is our favourite but silver will do.
Now that we have saved you, all of that fuss.
We hope you will come, and celebrate with us.

Here are what one typically looks like-has a card slot in the top like any card holder.

Just tell them that you are not registered anywhere if they ask- that should be enough.

I have to respectfully disagree with Peteysbride... Even if that is gaining in popularity, it's still pretty tacky to me! It's also very rude to mention gifts at all in wedding invites.

Also, as a practical matter, I think the OP has already sent out her invites.

And to the OP, don't worry!!! - MOST people (especially in-state people) will give you $ for the wedding.

ETF typos.

you can't expect people to pay for your lifestyle. There is no way to say that you want cash. its rude and inappropriate.
