We always have a dilemma......because if we go to my FH's family, my family takes it all personal and thinks they are stealing me away. We try to alternate, but I am really dreading Thanksgiving and Christmas as a newlywed I can see the arguments now!

Re: How do you handle holidays with the in-laws?
The only holidays I spend with FI's family is Xmas Day and New Year's Day. All the other holidays FI is with me and my family, but we have decided that the only holiday that we will alternate once we are married is Thanksgiving.

I'm in the same boat. Everyone is so touchy. I can't wait till we have our own place, and we can host the holidays! We do the half dinner at each house for Thanksgiving and we spend Christmas Eve with his family and Christmas day with mine. It's worked for us for the past few years of dating.
think about what you did as a kid...your parents were once in the same situation...I spent 2 Christmases away from my family...I thought my mother would be upset...but she wasn't...well I should say that she understood...
for thanksgiving we used to try to do both...

i spend half the day of thanksgiving at his house and half at my moms. christmas eve is at his house, christmas day at my moms, and new years eve at his uncles house. once we get our apartment everyone can come there.

It's easy for us since he's Jewish and I'm Catholic so the only holiday we have to share is Thanksgiving. We usually spend that with his family, since we see my family alot more on a regular basis.

We actually have to travel to Chicago for FH's family and Ohio for mine. Therefore, we alternate families b/w Christmas and Thanksgiving each year. It works well for us.

It's a good thing alot of Jewish holidays have 2 nights to them- like Passover, Yom Kippur, etc... although for holidays like Thanksgiving we alternate every other year.

We rotate every holiday between the families so its 'fair' to everyone. One year xmas at my moms and the next xmas at my FILs.
For mothers and father's day though we host something at our place so we can be with both families.

Re: How do you handle holidays with the in-laws?
I'm taking over the holidays that my mom has at her house, so Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, Palm Sunday and Thanksgiving are going to be at our house. John's parents have Christmas day, New Years Day, Easter at their house, so that wont change.
The only problem I foresee is Mother/Fathers day. His Mom would take it personal if we didnt go there, but then again I dont want to hurt my mom by not going to her house, maybe we'll just have those days at our house too

FIL's live in Atlanta so we spend most holidays here w/ my parents. Last year we flew down x-mas day and stayed the weekend. Since that worked out fine we'll probably be doing that from now on!

My parents are divorced and FH's family is WONDERFUL...they always invite my mom and brother so I don't have to choose..... (I'm not close to my dad)

Re: How do you handle holidays with the in-laws?
Well both of us still live at home, so it's been a tough 4 years, but we've managed it.
We split each holiday up, except for Christmas Eve, his family doesn't do much other than Church and my family goes nuts on that day, so we are with my family...
Easter - before dinner at my house, dinner & dessert at his
Christmas - before dinner with my family, dinner & dessert with his
Thanksgiving - dinner with my family, dessert with his
It's A LOT of travelling, because it's not just going back and forth to each other's houses, it's going all over the place! It's lots of fun! haha!

Re: How do you handle holidays with the in-laws?
FH is Jewish so he's willing to do Christmas with my family. Thanksgiving will be a traded thing... even though i know his parents will give him a hard time if he's not there... but tough! I have family out of town and i'd like us to go there sometimes! (I had to go by myself one year since his family wanted him home, wasn't very happy...)

Easter: we go to my moms
Mothers Day: we each go our own way
Fathers Day: he comes with me
Thanksgiving: we either visit my uncle or go to his parents
Christmas: we have breakfast with my mom and dinner with his.

Re: How do you handle holidays with the in-laws?
We host these occasions at our house in the event that there is an arguement.... like for Mother's day & Thanksgiving. Christmas eve is at my mom's, Christmas day is at his.... and Easter we split down the middle.... we do breakfast at my mom's and dinner at his.
Luckily our families live only 20 blocks away from each other, so we can split like that.
New Year's eve we go out!

Re: How do you handle holidays with the in-laws?
That is starting to be a problem here, at first my FH family did not get together that often, but they see that my family gets together at least 1 x a month. For Thanksgiving we go to my family, but are going to start to alternate it this year, Chnaukah we do 2 different days at each home, Mothers day at his sister in laws, we do not celebrate fathers day- my dad has passed on, and his dad is not around since he was little, big divorce in his family, Passover his family one day, my family the other day. It gets to be too much after awhile, eventually we will do some of the hosting of the holidays.
