You got engaged? I'm curious about this. So many Hollywood couples seem to date for a very short time before taking this step, but I suspect outside of Hollywood, it's a longer period of time.

Oh, I forgot to say how long I had dated--it was almost 2 1/2 years when we got engaged. The timing seemed right for both of us.

For us, it was a little over 2 1/2 yrs. But we moved in together after 6 mos!

FH and i were ready to get engaged about 1 month....i know the ring was bought around then....my mother asked that 'we wait to count our relationship in a matter of months rather then weeks' so we respected that....and right aroud 3 months we got engaged

One year and one month. We knew were gong to get engaged, we were waiting on the ring or it would have been sooner.

oohhhh...about 8 years! We met when we were young, tho..I was 17, he was 18..we have known we wanted to get married the whole time, but definitely wanted to wait until we graduated..then we needed to wait until we had some $$ to pay for the wedding! When we get married we will have been together for 10 years!

Hollywood is its own world but there are other factors to consider as well. It can be age related too. As you get older, you often do not need to date someone for a long period of time to know that they are or are not the one. My sister and her husband dated for less than 6 months and are married 16 years. My parents dated 6 weeks and had a 49 year marriage. Granted that is what people did back then but those are good numbers!

About 5 years, we are both very young. We started dating when I was 15 and he was 18, so we had to wait!

OMG! This sounds like my life story! When we got engaged it was 8 years dating. But we met right after I graduated HS, I was 17 and FH was 18. We got engaged last Christmas when we finally felt comfortable enough financially. It will be 10 years together in October 2006.

4 1/2 years
we were young when we met (in college) and werent ready to be engaged/married . We both finished school, got good jobs, we moved in together (at that point we knew it was meant to be) Timing is everything!
