My fh and I are at odds over the big question...where are you going to live?
When we get married, my fh and I will both be in our 30's. I want to find a cheap fixer upper house. I figure rent is a waste. We can be using that money to start to pay off a house. Hopefully we will have children down the road. My family and friends all tell me to try to find a starter home. My fh wants to stay in an apartment. His family agreess with him. They think we dont need a house without kids. And they feel no one moves right into a house.
So I was wondering ...where everyone is going to live?

I feel the SAME as you. I want a house in the worst way but............can we afford it is the question. It's like a catch 22.
Rent........... cant save for a house from now until the wedding....... cant save for a house cause we gotta save to pay for the wedding.
We are paying our own way for the wedding so every penny counts right now.

Re: How many of you are going to get a house
My DH and I just got married a month ago and we are buying a house. We might have waited to save some more money but we are buying his parent's house so it is a once in a lifetime opportunity that we cannot pass up!!
I understand you are anxious but usually, you can save money renting so that maybe you won't have to buy a complete fixer-upper. Just something to think about.
Good luck

We are also paying for most of the wedding ourselves, as I think most couples do these days. I guess I just got depressed tonite, realizing how much is going to have to go into this wedding. My fh is the one who wants a big -big wedding. I know Im odd, but I would be happier with a small wedding and use that money for a down payment.

I know how you feel. Really. 10 Months is not alot of time for me to save. Origionally I didn't want a big wedding and neither did FH but once we started planning.... we planned. But if there's a will theres a way and I've got a will!

We are paying for the wedding and paying for our apt., but our rent is really cheap, so we are staying here until we get a house, hopefully soon

We are going to look for a condo or townhouse first, then when it comes time that we want to start our family, we will buy a house.

Re: How many of you are going to get a house
we both want a house... luckily I saved for one... we both decided a house means spending money and getting to keep it!.. although if you dont have the money then renting is the way to go..

Re: How many of you are going to get a house
We both want a house badly..we started looking, got preapproved that whole bit..but have kind of put it off with the wedding..its ****s for us because what we pay in rent is pretty much a mortgage ..so we are only screwing ourselves. HOPEFULLY after our wedding, we will have a better idea of when we can realistically buy a house.right now we cant see straight.

Re: How many of you are going to get a house
We plan on buying a house before thewedding, probably next year. We are looking in Long Island, don't know where yet. He owns a family business here, and we don't want to be far from family.
Too bad its sooooo expensive here. you don't get much for the money.

Re: How many of you are going to get a house
I would love to find a cheap fixer upper, and hopefully the market will come down by the time we get married. If we can't afford a house, we are going to try to buy a condo, townhouse, or co-op. As long as we own and are not renting I will be happy.

Re: How many of you are going to get a house
FH and I refuse to get an apartment, because all that money put into rent ($1200-1500 per month) can be put towards a morgage. So the fact that we both don't care all that much for LI and it is so **** expensive here, we are going this Oct to look at homes in Houston, TX. FH has family there and they absolutly love it. I have no problem moving away, nothing is holding me back here. I am an RN so finding a job will not be hard at all. In TX everything is so affordable, that we are actually looking into builders and will have our house built NEW! This excites me a lot, because I will be able to just really make it my own with lots of personal touches. I see my sister and her FH struggling right now to find a place to live here on the island, before their Oct '03 wedding coming up. It is so much stress and I feel for you. I don't think families should but into yours and FH's personal life, including your decision of where to live. You should really have a private talk with him and express your feelings on the living condition you prefer. Good Luck!

Paintbrush....
I had just turned 30 and FI (now DH) was 31 when we were wed. Like you, we are DINKs and didn't think we needed the extra space a house would provide. At the time, we also didn't have enough $ for a downpayment b/c we paid for our own wedding so we lived in an small apartment our first year. And it was small....but it helped us save $.
Being double income with no kids and NO other deductions we were SLAMMED on income taxes our first year. We set out immediately to buy a home...which ended up really being a condo. It is a 1,000 sf ranch and is like a starter home. It needed some TLC so we were able to get it below market. Our mortgage, taxes and condo fees are less than we would spend on a 2 bedroom apartment...and we get the deduction of the mortgage interest and real estate taxes (so it costs even less!) Uncle Sam actually owed US money this year!
I'm not sure what your tax bracket is...but you might want to consult with an accountant and consider this aspect when making your decision.

Re: How many of you are going to get a house
We bought our house 2 years ago, a little back-wards, but it worked out perfectly. This year we did a refinance and can use the equity in our house to pay for our wedding.
We live in CA just south of San Francisco and the housing market is almost a steep as NY. The high rent was killing both of us, so it made more sense to buy and get the tax break. Good luck to all, making that inital investment is a huge step!!!
