How much would you bring to a wedding??

Original post by Soon2bMrsB91511

FH and I were having this discussion with FILs the other night, and apparently, we have 2 VERY different opinions when it comes to this.

If you don't feel comfortable answering, you can give a range.

$100-200 per couple
$200-300 per couple
$300-400 per couple
$400-500 per couple
$500+ per couple

Also, do you feel venue affects how much you give?

I guess $300... and for family probably $400.

Not sure where I stand on the venue thing.... I think it depends more on my relationship with the bride/groom for sure.

Venue does not really matter. However, off Long Island I would never give that much. It's definitely a Long Island/City thing.

THIS too!

I've been very vocal about the gift thing on these boards before.

Personally I like to give $2-300 per couple... and it's based on who the people are relative to me and what I can afford at the time. I've been a student until very recently and now I don't have a 'real' job so I might not give as much as I'd like to.

Venue doesn't and shouldn't affect what I give. I wasn't consulted about where you decided to have your wedding, whether it's the Swan Club or the Garden City Hotel and we're not all going out to Applebees to split dinner. You invited me to a party to celebrate with you and I'm giving you a GIFT, not paying for tickets to attend your event.

I HATE the phrase 'cover your plate'. HATE IT.

I have a question related to this. FH and I are going to his cousin's wedding in Los Angeles this weekend. FH is the best man and I am a BM. How much do you think is appropriate considering we are already spending a ton travelling out there and paying for regular BP expenses?

I said $500 from both of us is plenty, but FH wants to give $750-1000!!! With all of our own expenses that is a lot of money to us.

What do you all think?

Do you ladies feel like you would take venue into account when making your decision???

No.... The only thing I take into account is my financial situation at the time. I typically go to at least 6 weddings a year with my FH so that along with my current salary and place in life is what I take into consideration. I mean, I can't go broke over a few weddings!!!

A few years ago, I was only able to afford $200-$250 b/c I was paying for grad school. Now, I give more.

I had a friend who was having a destination wedding but had a pre-wedding celebration at a restaurant. I gave $300 just like I did to my other friends!
