How much do you give your friends at weddings? Not your best friend necessarily, just a good friend.
Me and my girls were talking about this the other night and we all had different ideas of what the 'standard' gift would be. . . .
I did it in a poll so no one has to say what they choose.
(if you and FH attended)

Re: How much would you give as a wedding gift?
I always thought that the RH had a lot to do with it. My mom always told me to cover my plate and add some extra. I used to look up reception hall prices on the internet anf base it from there. It might sound strange but at least I knew that the B&G were getting something extra.

depending on the relationship with the couple, we give anywhere from 300-500...I don't give less than 150PP because I feel like that's what it costs to even have us there, but remember, a gift is a gift, you give whatever you can/want, and everyone should be grateful!

I dont want to start any trouble but I totally disagree..I give what I give regardless of how much the plate costs. I am usually generous and would never give less bc my friend had a less expensive wedding...nor would I give a bigger gift if someone had a 'platinum wedding' .

Re: How much would you give as a wedding gift?
Great post! I think I posted something like this awhile ago...or no actually it was how much to give at a bridal shower!!!!!
Ok so up until last year I gave $200...but many people that came to my wedding gave me more than I gave them and I feel so bad!!! But on another note...I could not afford to give more than that at the time! Nowadays I can afford more so $250-300 is what I will give!
Another side note...if I know the bride and groom paid for the wedding themself...I tend to feel bad and give alittle more...is that wrong???

I would give 250 for a friend, but for a really close friend I would do at least 300, maybe even more depending on other factors (do I have to travel and stay in a hotel, then I give a little less, etc.)

Re: How much would you give as a wedding gift?
I dont give money to cover the plate, i do it for other reasons. Now i dont expect others to do what i do and not saying its what should be done, I do it for my own reasons and not saying whats right or wrong. Everyone should only do what they are comfortable with.
But in my culture i have always grown up with the idea to give alot. The idea behind it is to help a couple starting out their marriage and new life, not so i can cover my plate, bc like someone else said, if a couple decides to make it expensive everyone shouldnt be responsible to pay for it. Growing up ive always been to events and they gave alot so i guess it stuck with me.
Normally i'd say we give $300-350. Dh is the same way and he had real close friends get married recently, these were real close friends and we gave about $500-600, other times about 400-500. Its not the same all the time, not like we follow an outline on what to give but do it for different reasons each time. Of course theres always different circumstances such as how youre doing financially at the time, or if youre travelling for the wedding.
I dont think any should feel pressured to give more or less. You shouldn't give what you're not comfortable giving.

i agree, if i give a friend lets say $350 and another friend has a wedding that im just as close to, i wouldnt give less if their wedding was less expensive. Last year 2 of dh's friends got married, we gave the same, didnt matter that we knew one spent less than the other

Re: How much would you give as a wedding gift?
It depends on how close we are to the people. We would never consider giving under $250.00 to people we aren't really close with and haven't given under $300.00 to anyone yet. Close friends and family start at $500.00 (at least) though.

Re: How much would you give as a wedding gift?
wow...it's really interesting. Gifts are much, much, much, bigger in this part of the country. On the other hand, weddings are much more expensive. I gave a friend a 250 dollar gift, (six flatware settings), and worried it was over-the-top. People keep saying they are going to give me cash as a gift, I don't mind it, but it still feels strange coming from my contemporaries! In other states, 60-80 is acceptable, I probably did around 100. And 'boxed' gifts are the norm. My friend in WI, doesn't have anything over 59.99 on her registry, and I almost wanted to tell her to aim a little higher.

I've been to tons of upstate weddings and FH has been to tons in NH and ME....they are all about giving gifts. In Long Island, the 5 boroughs, NJ and even CT...it's about giving cash gifts. Mainly to start the bride and groom off with a bit of a nest. At least that is what I am told.

With the cost of weddings now a days. I think $150 per person is fair
