Did anyone ever grow up near the old TSS in Elmont? Well my husband did and supposedly they used to fly Santa in via helicopter and land in the parking lot of what is now Home Depot. He says everytime he saw a helicopter from like age 2 to age 9 he would start screaming because he thought it was Santa!!!!
OMG, I think I just heard myself getting older...
YES I grew near there and remember TSS but not the Santa in a chopper! LOL
I was thinking of this the other day, I can't remember when I stopped believing nor how I found out but I think I was quite old, maybe 12? I think I knew and never said anything 'cause I was thinking whoever was delivering the goods would stop!

2nd grade, I was 7, and a total believer, the day before we got out for christmas break, my teacher, Sister Flaviana, broke the news to the class, it was horrible, I still don't know why she did that
Thats horrible!!!! Were a lot of parents upset? I know I would be if someone told my child Santa didn't exist...unless my child was 18 and still believed, lol...
Sister Flaviana is a meanie :(
lets say school got out at 3, she made this announcement at 2:45, I think we were all in shock, I never did tell my parents, I think it would have hurt them

That is horrible! I also kind of 'grew' out of it. I guess by 3rd grade. You want to keep believing and I have a younger brother and sister (my sister is 10 years younger) so I got to believe (play along) for a long time. Now, I have a nephew (1 month old) so SANTA is back! He never really 'left' my mind. I love believing! !!
Re: how old were you when you were told there is no such person as Santa? And how did you find out
Santa was evil Evil in a way which can not be completely described, but I’ll try.
Santa was a imaginary being which would or would not dispense gifts to children which he choose were worthy enough to be allowed to have gifts from him. This gifts were his choice and not a given. Evil and wrong children could and would still get gifts but they got gifts from relatives and family members as you were most OBVIOUSLY not on Santa’s good list. The more gifts you got from ‘Santa’ the better you were, the more gifts you got from others, the more you needed to work on your behavior.
My mom would say Santa was the devil’s way of taking Christ out of xmas. Folks forgot the true purpose of the holiday and if I tried too hard to wish Santa would give me something, I’d get nothing at all.
I pretty much gave up on the idea of Santa around the same time I realized Santa and s*a*tan had the same letters. So I was young.
I was the only kid in class who liked to draw Santa, decorate Santa and write letters to Santa, but NEVER EVER EVER wanted to MEET him. I was terrified he’d see through me and find the ‘devil’s spawn’ my mother’s church youth director had once called me.
Is it ANY wonder I’m Agnostic? LOL
Unfortunately I’m still torn if I could do the ‘Santa’ thing to my kids. I rather just not lie to them and say the gifts are from who they are actually from. Then I feel like the poor child will be ridiculed in school for not believing (and they say church and state aren’t mixed). I dunno.

Hmmm...I can understand how people do think the 'christ' is taken out of christmas..my grandma says that all the time. But i've never really thought that it was on account of Santa. I think that Santa is a magical concept and some of my happiest memories were of being little and anticipating santa along with my brothers and sisters. When I stopped believing it was disappointing...but...I quickly got over it and loved to see it experienced through the eyes of my baby sisters and then my cousins...Everyone of course has a right to decide what they want to tell their kids about Santa...I think a lot of it is HOW you tell your kids...if you make him out to be a good person that loves children, cookies and giving presents....well in my opinion, there is nothing evil about that!
On a side note...when you said Santa had the same letters as ***** i started laughing because i thought of the 'church lady' skit on SNL with Dana Carvey..she used to say that :)

I was in third grade so about 8. My brother kept teasing me and saying there was no such thing (he was 3 years older) I couldn't take it anymore so I asked my mother and made her tell me if there was such a thing, when she said, no I started crying and said, 'this ruined my Christmas.'

Re: how old were you when you were told there is no such person as Santa? And how did you find out
I was SIX! I was WAY, WAY too smart for my own age. I have been a very literal person since the time I was born, and the June after my sixth birthday, I was in the car with my mom and looked at her and said, 'Ok, mom, tell me the truth, there's no santa, is there?' And she was so taken back that she started to cry, then I kept pushing and said, 'What about the tooth fairy and the easter bunny? I know THEY can't be real either!' So she started to cry even more, then I told her that I promised to forget by the time Christmas and Easter came again I just never understood the concept of a man I couldn't see who brought me presents. I will never forget that conversation with my mom

Ok, I'm Jewish, so I never had the need to believe in Santa, but I never believed in the tooth fairy either! My sister used to complain that I was no fun b/c I didn't believe in any of that stuff.
My parents made me promise not to tell the other kids at school that there was no such thing as santa - they were afraid I would spoil Christmas for them!!!!
I once sat on Santa's lap at the mall and told him I celebrated Chanukah!!!

I was 9 & my 12 year old cousin told me. I was devasted. I kept on 'believing' though until 12 so Santa (aka dad's bearded jewish friend) would still come with his garbage bags of presents on Christmas Eve---but of course it was for my 10 year old brother's sake

Wait. I have issues right now. I just heard that there is no such thing as Santa. Then whose been giving me all those lousy gifts?
'well you might not believe this buddy but a lot of people down south don't believe in Santa' 'WHAT who do they think puts all the presents under the tree' 'well they think the parents do that' that's ridiculous and santas cookies I suppose the parents eat them too' 'yup thats what they think'
