Just wondering everyones feelings on this... I wanted to hyphen my name but when I brought it up FH was really upset about it. He actually seemed kind of offended. Needless to say I'm not gonna do it now, he doesn't ask much of me and if taking his name means that much to him then ok. But I can't really see why he's so bothered by it. Anyone else's FH have a similar reaction?

Re: Hyphenating name?
LOL. This is a great question. I was talking with a few friends about this b4 we got engaged and I said I'd want to take his name and not keep mine or hyphenate it. I expressed my points and values for doing so, and the one girl turned around and said to me, 'you're so old fashioned.' I was like, 'No, I'm classic.' So..... different strokes for different folks! I can def see a guy being a little bent out of shape about it. I think thats an initial reaction, maybe if its what you really wanted and he sat with it for a day or so he'd feel differently.

Re: Hyphenating name?
I'll be taking FH's last name. I LOVE my current last name but I'm excited to take FH's name because I want to and like Linda said...'I'm classic' in that respect

Re: Hyphenating name?
Lol I wish I hated my last name to just make life easier! And I do want his name just to be somewhat traditional and we already have a son so I figure it would be easier when he starts school for me to have the same name as our son. My reason for wanting to hyphen it (this may sound silly) is because I feel like my last name is the only hint of Hispanic I have. I am 100% puerto rican but don't at all look it or speak Spanish or anything. I feel like my name is all I have of my culture and I don't want to lose it! But FH feels that taking his name is really what makes it real that we're married and there wouldn't be much of a point otherwise. I don't know, I guess I'm just venting. Thanks for lettin me get it out girls lol

Re: Hyphenating name?
My FH would prefer for me to change my name, but he knows I don't want to. I know it disappoints him, but I know he also loves that I am independent and he'd never ask me to change my name if I didn't want to.
I think you should think long and hard about what YOU want. You can always legally hyphenate or take your maiden name as a middle name but use only his name socially. There are compromises to be made.

Re: Hyphenating name?
No offense to my family but I can't wait to change my name. I go from R in the alphabet to C and its easy to pronounce & spell!

Re: Hyphenating name?
I joked one day that he should take my name since its so nice LOL but when I brought up in a semi joking way that I would hyphenate my name, he was very turned off. He gave me 'the look' and just said in that voice 'are you kidding me' I knew right there the answer LOL
I never really ever thought of it too much, guess that's the only thing I'm old fashion with. But I had the same idea, he doesn't ask much and if there are a few things that he does want then so be it. I lucked out cause he's got a good last name also

Re: Hyphenating name?
i am taking FH's name BUT if I wasn't uber thrilled to let go of my own last name I would make him negotiate and go for the hyphen! legally it can be the hyphen but you can still socially refer to yourself as 'Mrs. Jane Doe' v. 'Mrs. Jane Play-Doh' lol!

Re: Hyphenating name?
After debating for a while with him we decided I'm Hyphenating. At first I jokingly said I wasn't going to take his last name at all and he got pretty offended. Now every time we talk about this he says he thinks it's cool that I get to have two last names and hyphenate since I have a cool last name. (My last name means happy in another language and I really like that and don't want to give it up). So we're both happy.

Re: Hyphenating name?
FH is taking my last name since his parents made up his last name and everyone pronounces it wrong.

Re: Hyphenating name?
At first I was totally cool about taking his last name and now I'm having some serious issues with it. I like my last name, professionally it helps to have everyone who knows me as this last name.
I wouldn't hypenate because I think it will sound silly, but I know FH would be really offended if I didn't take it. He said its my decision and he's honored by it, so I haven't told him yet that I'm having 2nd thoughts.

Re: Hyphenating name?
First I just wanted to say HI DATE TWIN!!!!!
I want to change to my last name because I'm not a huge fan of the name I have now. People have asked me why I don't hyphen my name and FH tends to get bent out of shape when people ask me. I'm not sure why he gets so upset, but he does.

Re: Hyphenating name?
If I hyphenate my name it will be sooooo long, I have a very long Italian name to begin with, adding his would be ridiculous, lol
I like his last name, but I will really miss mine! I wish I had a brother to keep it going
ETS: spelling...

Re: Hyphenating name?
FH is ok with me doing whatever I want. he just wants me to be happy according to him...
..I know for kids it's easier to take his name, but I don't want to give me up haha
though as a teacher I don't want to be referred to be a super long hyphenated name.
I guess i'm just having a hard time letting go of my name!! i think i'll just wind up changing it completely...
