FH's cousin is getting married in May and we received the invitation. This is his first cousin, whom I have met, and they know we are getting married.....yet on the invitation, they didn't even bother to put my name, and we live together! They just put & Guest. We were offended. I think for our wedding we're going to put her name & First husband

That's pretty rude. Especially since you are engaged. Rude, rude.

i would be insulted also especially since they know your name. we and my FH have been together for 4 years and my family still puts and guest on the envelope. we lift apart but still!!!!!

Re: I am offended, wouldn't you be?
I understand why you would be offended(I would probably be offended, but I have issues with my FIL's, LOL), but personally their have been times in my life where I have addressed things in the same manner(when I probaly shouldn't have) because I didn't know the persons last name & so all my invites would be addressed the same.

'...& First husband' - LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very funny!
I guess they thought it's '& Guest' until you're married. True, they should have went the extra mile to find out ettiquette, but I wouldn't obsess on it! I am sure it was not meant to hurt you, as tude as it may be!

I would be annoyed. Obviously they know your first name. Couldn't they call you to get your last name?!?!?!

yes i was offended when good friends of ours did that to me. They put his name and guest. Their excuse was that they didn't know how to spell my last name!???? His other friends did that too. It is just not proper etiquette!!! (sp)

Re: I am offended, wouldn't you be?
That happened to me. My FH's best friend is getting married in May and us in August. Their invitation said ' & Guest'. What the hell is the matter with people. My FH said something to his best friend and he said that she asked and the best friend couldn't remember my last name - SO WHY NOT ASK!! It is called courtesy!!!

I'm guilty.
When I filled out invitations I did write & Guest, even if people were engaged. We invited a lot of friends, especially DH's and it took me long enough to get the addresses from him, never mind the correct spelling of his friend's significant others! In the interest of time- I put & 'guest'. Also- some of the enaged people didn't live together- so I addressed it to who the invitation was being mailed too with & Guest- we didn't have inner envelopes as we had duchess invites and they don't come with inners- so really- I didn't know what choice I had.. but I didn't do it to offend anyone- and I'm sure no one meant to offend you either.. chuck it up as someone who didn' t read the emily post hand book!

Re: I'm guilty.
I think its kind of insensitive to write '& guest', especially if you know the significant other's full name. (I actaually called a few people to get their BF or GF's last name to put on the placecards & invites) If you don't know who the person is dating, then it would be okay to write '& guest' I would think.

FH and I have been living together and I got an invitation that read

Re: I'm guilty.
I addressed all my married couples as 'Mr. & Mrs. John Jones' inner and outer envelopes. It was easier than trying to track down everybody's full names.
The two couples we had not-married but living together, I put 'Mr. Jones and Miss Smith'
Unfortunately, one of them is going to City Hall shortly to get married. I told my FH that I'm NOT changing the invitation because they're going out very soon and I've already been to the calligrapher twice!!
On another one, I wasn't sure of the last name of my second cousin's 'wife' or if they are even married at all! (we're not close). So I put.... Mr. Jones' on the outer envelope, and inside I put John and Mary---first names only. I thought it was better that way.
You know what? It's so hard to keep track of who is who these days, whose living together, engaged, separated, divorced, secretly married, etc. There are bound to be some mistakes along the way.

Re: I am offended, wouldn't you be?
we got an invitation for a christening and the invitation had just brians name on it. the card had just brians name on it. I threw a fit and a half. He kept saying well maybe it wasnt her who wrote out the invitations. I told him stop making excuses, its rude, ignorant and I am not going.
