I know the feeling, in my office they leave early or don't come in for plays, school trips, birthday parties, Halloween outings, etc...

I don't mind it, I just wish it was a fair policy across the board - I should be able to leave to visit friends for dinner, take someone to the airport, etc....

Wacky, but these women that leave early are most likely doing extra work/reading at home!!! After the kids are asleep!!!

I had a woman at my old office who used to leave early every day and have every friday off

But she also came into the office at 7am, never left her office, took work home with her and spent a lot of time on her cell phone with us.

so the ones who are leaving early could also be doing work in other ways

I want to have kids too, but not to leave work early. I would love to have a baby here in my office, sleeping in a crib or something

I don't think it's fair for them to think they are ENTITLED to it because they have kids.

Whoa, this is a little strong If those women work at other times, but would like to spend time with their children, there is nothing wrong with that!!! I have female coworkers who often leave a bit earlier, but then finish their work at 10 pm, when the kids are in bed...

Edited to add that child rearing is a natural process, not a luxury!!! And while it is ok to put in extra hours here and there, especially when one is single/childless, it may not necessarily be ok for those with families, particularly women, who tend to be the caretakers/dinner cookers/etc!!!

By working a little less, they are already to some degree slowing down their professional success, and again, nothing wrong with that either. Your time will come to be a mother and you will appreciate the leniency of your manager and coworkers at that time.

Alina - you are making the assumption they are doing work at home which is not necessarily the case.

Nor is it fair to assume that all these women think they are 'entitled' to leave early!!!

They are entitled to complete their work and have a normal family family life. How they do it is not a business of the coworkers, but a business of HR and the manager.

get back on that soap box alina!!! I agree with you...and if it weren't for Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton getting on their soapboxes then many if not most of us would be where we are today...educated, working, productive, HEARD!!!

I think by making some of these comments sets the women's movement back...and backs the glass ceiling...

working mothers are some of the hardest working employees at my company. The ones that I am in contact with yes will leave early or have to miss a few meetings but they are also the ones that are working until midnight and coming in on the weekends to get the job done.

If there are some working mothers that have lenant bosses.....more power to them!!! They have enough to do taking care of their child and balancing a career. As long as it does not effect my job performance they could work from home 4 days a week if thats what their bosses wanted : ).

I don't think leniency should only come with motherhood.

I work hard and do my job well and THAT is why my manager is lenient with me when I need to attend to personal matters during business hours.

I think the same rules should apply to all employees. We all have personal lives that will interfere with regular business hours and vice versa.

Is that like the smokers feeling they are entitled to abuse cigarette breaks all day long? Or that wedding planners can use office time to utilize the internet?

Stop looking over your shoulder at everyone else and wonder what they are doing. Unless you are HR or the person signing off on the checks, it's not your concern about how or what they do with company time.

Christine, I agree about all employees having understanding bosses, however, I would imagine that a working parent will have a higher frequency of having to leave early, whether its because day care is closing early or there is an important baseball game.

Its easy to move adult activities around your schedule, but a child will not necessarily understand why your job is more important then them at the time of their special moment.

I do think that one should be allowed to take time off for doctor appts and such, if they aren't available after hours.
