I think there is a way to provide women (and men for that matter) with work plans that allow them to function full-time with a flexible schedule that does not reduce moral or cause bitterness with employees.
For example, SAS in North Carolina is the BEST company to work for- has child care ON SITE as well as doctors, health centers, hairdressers, massage therapists, etc. They have the lowest employee turn around out there.
What that says to organizational behaviorists is that taking care of your employees, making them happy in their personal lives AS WELL as their work lives will make them work harder for you and will SAVE THE COMPANY MONEY.
Look at it this way.. a woman works in a company for 5 years and then has a baby. The company isn't willing to be flexible for her. That woman walks away with 5 years of tacit knowledge that the company needs. On top of it- it will take a lot of time and $ for that company to hire another employee and bring her back to that level. It's MUCH more expensive to hire new employees than keep your present ones happy.
Most of these companies (like the one you worked for, Christine) can't see the forest through the trees. They are so focused on their immediate 'bottom line' that they don't see how advantageous it would be to their company to keep ALL of their employees (not just the moms) happy.
