I have a female question-Update--

Original post by cherish83

I've been on the pill for a couple of years now. FH and I had sex last weekend and I started spotting and its been getting heavier. I've spotted once before after sex but never this much. I have an appt with my gyno on the 28th, but I'm a little worried as to why. Has this happened to anyone else or does anyone know why?

Sorry if this is too personal. But thanks!

Update - 2/29

So I finally went to the Gyno yesterday and initially everything looked fine. She said I dont look pregnant but took my urine to put my mind at ease. I told her that I have been bleeding after sex for a while and that the last time it continued for a while. She said that it may be the pill since I've been on it for a while and she may need to change my medication.

But then she did the exam. She touched the cervix, and I bled. So now I have to go for a pelvic sonogram. I'm a little worried. Stupid me starts researching last night and one of the first things i see is cancer. I have to call today to schedule the sonogram.

Fh tried to make light of it saying I'm broken First my heart problems back in November, than I had surgery in December for another problem, and now this. Go figure that the dr would be concerned about something yesterday.

Not to scare you, but you said you had surgery...were you on any antibiotics? Because that reduces the 'promise' of the pill working.

I know. The pharmacist told me that, and thats a reason we waited an extra month to start up again. I went through one cycle of pills to make sure.

I've been on the pill for too long to even mention but I know this has happened to me before. My doctor explained that especially when you're on a low estrogen pill (like orthrotrycyclon-lo) for too long sometimes your body gets so used to (if that makes sense) it that it's not enough hormone and you start to have break through bleeding (between periods). That's when you have to switch to a higher estrogen pill. That's what happened to me and switching pills did the trick.

spotting is normal.
I wouldnt worry too much.. you'll probably just have to switch pills

the only thing I want to tell you is not to take BC for too long.. I know alot of people that cant have babies because they've been on the pill.. this one person I know has been taking the pill for 5 years and shes been trying to get pregnant for a 1-2 year now and still is unsuccessful.. they even tried to implanting the fertilized egg for alot of money.... she did get pregnant but it was a miscarriage.

just an heads up....

I was on one pill for years and got break through bleeding so my doc switched me to something else. You may just need to switch brands.

Would that mean the pill is less effective on my body now?

No, not less effective. Your uterus is shedding it's lining. Just means it's time to switch.

That's not true. Many people get pregnant right away off the pill. Fertility issues are a lot more common than people think.

Which pill are you on? I had random problems with spotting when I was on my last pill. Did you forget to take a pill at the normal scheduled time? That can cause some spottage.

Im on orhotryclen lo (sp) and thats the one Ive always been on. I always take the pill around the same time at night.

i was on this as well. it all of a sudden made spot from mid cycle all the way into my period. my gyno just changed my precription and it never happened again. our bodies are very sensitive and fickle... so don't stress.

I was just going to say that. And 5 years really isn't that long to be on it.

im not saying it happens to everyone but it can happen.. it takes your body time to adjust and get used to new hormone levels. for some it can take a few months but for others it can take longer... I have read many people saying it can take up to a year.. depending on your body.... so you cant really say that its false.. its not just coincidence that it happens..

'90% of pill-users become pregnant within a year of coming off the pill. This being said, it does take some women longer to become pregnant after stopping the pill.'

Agreed, one has NOTHING to do with the other.

Go figure that the dr would be concerned about something yesterday.

oh I hope you're okay! maybe it's just a cyst or something? my sisters have had similar problems and they've been fine, it usually ended up being that they had cysts.

Thats what I originally thought. Wouldn't she have seen that yesterday?

my sisters always had to get sonograms though. I don't think they can necessarily tell for sure during the regular exam. I would go asap just to get your mind at ease but hoping it's just that. don't get me wrong - it can be painful or uncomfortable but they never had any other problems relating to having the cysts.

I used to have the SAME problem. I was petrified! I totally know how you feel! Some people are just very sensitive and your body might be reacting poorly to the pill that youre on. I bleed EVERY time during an exam to the point that they thought maybe my paps werent really accurate. Don't worry yourself too much over this - you're young and healthy and its more than likely just a reaction you're having to your pill. I've been on Loestrin FE for a few years now (I use to take Ortho) and things are much better. I hope youre ok!
