I just read...**Updated w/ a entry from that site**
Original post by MrsGarcia
on some site where the bride was thinking about doing a donation instead of a traditional favor, and about 60% of the brides to be answered back that its low class and tacky!!
I was thinking about doing a donation due to the fact that both FH and I's grandfathers died due to heart issues, also my mother had a heart attack a few years ago. So it makes sense to us.
So with that said... Do any of you feel its a 'tacky' thing to do? Reading what I read really put a damper on this, to think that some guest would actually find this tacky.

Absolutely NOT tacky. Thoughtful, respectful and classy.

Truthfully, I don't even know what happens to most of the favors I bring home. But the one I REMEMBER the most was actually a donation favor.... the couple spends a lot of time outdoors, biking and hiking and such. Their donation was planting a tree for every guest at their favorite state park. I thought that was pretty cool.

exactly! I have heard this so many times ... although lst 4th of july we went to a wedding where they gave donations to two places, cause the bride's mom and the grooms dad passed away from it (i dont remember what it was) and they also got a photobooth and gave out sparklers and cookies so that people felt they took something home.. I think that was the only time I didnt hear people complain! lol

Re: I just read...
I've been to three weddings already where donations have been made in lieu of a favor. I don't think it's tacky at all. The first wedding I went to I was like WOW that is so nice, and such a great idea. Most favors get thrown out anyway.
For our wedding we have decided to do the donation to the American Heart foundation (FH's father passed away when he was 3 from a heart attack). I just think it has more meaning behind getting a random favor. In my experience most of the favors I have gotten from weddings I have thrown out.

It's not tacky at all. Time for another patented blunt Ali answer...I'm sure that this site was middle america, and not the NY metro area, which tends to be a little more forward thinking and progressive. It's just straight ignorance to think it's tacky, and by no means should it influence your decision in any way. I'm sure they love their favors in Kansas, but on Long Island I really don't think a guest is going to care that they don't bring home their 5th cake server.
I hope you find whatever site this was and tell them this.

Absolutely not!! I think it is a great idea...especially if the charity is one that you have picked because it has a special meaning to you and FH.

We're donating also....if my guests are angry bc they didn't get some $3-$7 dollar favor, then I find that to be a tacky complaint!

Re: I just read...
I dont think its tacky... i actually think its really nice if it a charity that hit close to home... BUTTTTT i could see people thinking 'they prob never even donated the money'... in that case, i would def give a donation and a little something extra if i was going that route

It is NOT tacky.
It is NOT tacky.
They EXPECT to get a favor?
Truck all those who think its tacky.
Period.
You do what YOU want. And to heck with what anyone thinks!! Its your wedding day. You do it your way on your day!
Your grandfathers would be PROUD of you. Let those other people think about THAT!
And by the way, I am not having favors at all :)

I was thinking of doing a donation to breast cancer research...I don't think it's tacky at all. I think it is a wonderful idea and that 95% of guests would think so too

Ladies ... heres one of the entries.. Tell me you don't wanna slam this person into a wall
A favor is in nature a small token of appreciation/gift to the guests.A donation then is not a favor. In find these type of so-called favors extremely offensive as they have nothing to do with the guests.
People that are really philantrophic and caring do not use their wedding show showcase their donation and generosity to look good. It's not the place or the moment and it's in bad manners to discuss your donations with your guests as if they should know how good of a person you are. If you really care, donate privatly like a lady.
This is my experience. At a wedding that I attended, the bride and groom cut cortners everwhere. They donated as a favor to cut costs and look good at the same time which was extremely low class. They had a cash bar and also they had those so called donation favors. I was offended becase after spending $1500 on plane tickets, $800 on hotel accomodations $180 on car rental, $160 on tux rental, $50 on shower gift and $350 on their wedding gift, the least that they could do was to offer their guest a drink and a mint afterwards. They did the donation to cut costs as they had 200 guests and I doubt they donated more than $30
I say nay. Some people may find it offensive as it has nothing to to with their causes and it doest show appreciation to YOUR guests. Find other times to donate and be a lady and keep it to yourself. No advertisment is necesary when it comes from the heart.

Ok, as to that post. A cash bar is one thing (yes, that is tacky), but a donation in lieu of take home favors is not tacky. I went to a wedding a few years ago where the groom's father has recently died of cancer and the favors were a donation to a founation that works to cure that particular type of cancer. I really thought that was a very special and meaningful favor.
