I need advice - what would you do?
I have come to the realization I am just 100% miserable at my job. I won't get into long boring details but to me it is just mind-numbing and I am bored even though I am busy....to add to that, the commute is kicking my a**....My DH and I are kinda sorta TTC and I am feeling conflicted...I know if I stay here, I will get a good maternity leave, prob be able to work 1 day at home per week, etc...but the other 4 days I will be out of the house from 7am - 7pm!
Should I look closer to home (in NJ)? I guess if i get pg - by law in companies with over 50 employees, I am entitled to maternity leave...I am just at my wits end and hate getting up every day to come all the way here for somethign i hate....i love my coworkers but hate what i do. If I work in NJ close to home, I would prob get home at a decent time and I wouldn't be commuting 3 hours per day. Plus I would be closer to day care etc..(unless I could work PT but thats a diff story)!
What would you do? Help!

Re: I need advice - what would you do?
The way I look at it, it can't hurt to look, but I definitely wouldn't resign until you are offered something that you are more happy with. Sometimes even looking at job ads makes me more happy with my own, as I realize no job is perfect and I may have to do other types of areas which I don't enjoy...Good luck!

i would definitely look for a new job. you can make a decision later, if you're offered something.

Re: I need advice - what would you do?
I can identify with you and am in a similar situation....just be careful though because many companies do not provide PAID maternity leave...
also, some companies don't give 'maternity leave' per se, so the time off is covered under FMLA, which doesn't kick in immediately when you start a new job
it sucks! I cannot believe this info is true but that's what HR is telling me, so if anyone else knows of a different law, please advise!

Re: I need advice - what would you do?
Before I found out I was PG I was looking to leave my job. I am miserable here. But I am going to stay bc if I started a new job then I wouldn't be guaranteed my job if I decided to take 12 weeks of FMLA. You have to be with company 12 months or work a certain amt of hours to be covered. You could always stay through maternity leave. Look for a job while you are out and resign when maternity period is over. That's what I plan to do.

Why not put TTC on hold?Is TTC that important... where you can be miserable at your job?
Find a new job that you like... get established there... then TTC.

Re: I need advice - what would you do?
I work in HR so I am familiar with the FMLA laws etc...that is something I would examine VERY closely if I was offered something. I just realized that I am literally unhappy every single day and 40+ hrs / week is a lot to be unhappy. Can't I just win the lotto!!!

Mrs. TC.....I hope you don't mind me asking but, do you know for sure that it IS legal for a company to NOT give you paid maternity leave, separate and apart from FMLA?

Do you mean after FMLA? You are entitled by law for up to 12 weeks FMLA leave - do you mean, for example you take a leave of absence after the 12 week period? - if this is the case, yes, it is the company's decision whether or not they want to pay you. Even under FMLA they do not have to pay you - but if you are out on short term disability, most companies (like mine) have STD insurance or a salary continuation policy - and pay 100% salary. 6 weeks for a normal delivery and 8 weeks for a C-section. Then after that you can use vacation etc. The best thing for you to do is see what your company's policy is.

Re: I need advice - what would you do?
Well I haven't taken any leave and have been here 4 years. Let's say I get pregnant today...I am entitled to up to 12 weeks FMLA, right? Now let's say I take the 12 weeks, then immediately get pregnant again...my HR person told me I cannot take another 12 weeks because there is a waiting period. So basically, they are preventing me from having 2 kids back to back and keeping my job.

Re: I need advice - what would you do?
I know how you can feel. Often I feel very bored with my job and even considered a career change. I put off TTC since career is very impt to me but didn't find anything worth leaving my current job. So I finally decided it wasn't worth putting off TTC anymore. What I decided to do, was TTC and keep my eyes open on thejob market and go with whatever came first and considered it what is meant to be is meant to be. The baby came first. So now I will continue to work at my current job and come back even after the baby is born. And then take it from there. If I had found a job first, I would have put off TTC for awhile because professionally leaving for a few months after working at a company less than a year goes against my grain. I am the type that doesn't even like to take a vacation day for at least 6 months of starting a new job - never mind a maternity leave. So now I am hear and pregnant and somedays it is hard to get thru days - but try to think baby thoughts to get thru it....but believe me the commute - won't get easier pregnant.

Re: I need advice - what would you do?
It doesn't hurt to look. But look for companies that have good insurance and leave policies. It's okay to get into those questions during a second interview, it also show's the prospective company your interested in more than just $$$ but the over-all benefits you will be getting should you decide to join their company.
It's never easy to make a job change, but you shouldn't sacrafice your over-all happiness either.
