I JUST got a wedding invitation..inside the invitation (by the way it was addressed to Mr and Mrs... yet we are not married yet) there was a small card...the card states
Dear Friends, On this special day there is no better gift than your presence. At this time N and A will be living in rome, Italy and this is the reason they are choosing a wedding contribution instead of gifts.
Thanks
Is it me or is this completely unnecessary/??Please, let me know if i am overreacting.

You have GOT TO BE JOKING ME!????
that's even worse than one I heard about from a co-worker who told me that she was invited to a wedding last yr and the invite said 'no wrapped gifts'
That could have been cultural. Jehovah's witnesses do that to kind of skirt the no gift giving part of the religion. I saw something on Michael Jackson's mom (a Jehovah's Witness) and she requested gifts in brown paper bags for her lavish birthday party - a party that is totally against her religious beliefs in the first place.
Jehova's Witnesses are not against gift giving or receiving at all! They just don't do it for holidays or birthdays.

Re: I think this is rude...
I went to a wedding in February in which the bride and groom were going to move to China in April. They inserted a little note next to their invitation that said (in words similar to these): 'We're not registered anywhere. Since we are moving to China soon; however, we do wish to be able to cover our moving expenses. ' So it's not uncommon for people to be asking for cash, but I don't think including this message in the invitation is appropriate.

Re: I think this is rude...
in the indian community, it is very common for people to write on their invites 'no boxed gifts please'

Re: I think this is rude...
I would never include such a request in my invite...but there must be some reason that we are unaware of to include the request. True its tacky..but again, there has got to be a reason for it.

Re: I think this is rude...
LOL... I would make a contribution to a charity in their names and place that in their card! Let's see how that goes over!
Considering that they couldn't even bother to address the invitation properly, and then have the gall to ask for money... LOL... maybe I'm just a little petty about these things.....

If there is no better gift than your presence, why do they want a contribution?

Re: I think this is rude...
i just think nothing in the invitation should even hint at gifts. a gift is just that--- it is not required.

Actually, I don't think it's rude. I think they are just keeping it real. WHen you are not in your permanent residence you really don't want gifts. I mean, you appreciate what anyone gives you, but getting 'gifts' are really a hassle. FH and I are graduate students and we don't know where we are going to live next year (talking about in the country). We basically have everything thing we need in our apartment, and we don't really 'want' gifts because :1) we have no where to put them 2) we would have to travel back to CHicago with them or leave them at my parents house until we get a house
For me its especially hard because I invited a lot of people from CHicago and they keep asking me 'where are you registered'. If people don't know your family they tend to ask you directly. We registered so we tell them, but I really don't know how to tell people not to get us 'gifts' in a polite way, so I don't say it at all.
If people want to get her a gift, then they will. If they want to get her $$, then they will...

ummm...the couple lives in ITALY. I think they were trying to politely say, 'please don't give us STUFF...how the hell are we going to bring it to ROME?'
They probably could have worded it better, but I do understand that they were trying to send the message that they can't lug things across the Atlantic Ocean.
I totally agree with this!

Re: I think this is rude...
your FH has a point, i'm marrying into an ecuadorian family and that is my fear. But, I would never put that type of card in the invitation, it's just plain rude. At that point you would be insulting everyone else.

I agree. I don't think it is that big of a deal. Sure it isn't the norm around here to include such a note, but it really isn't that rude or tacky.
I don't think this is anymore rude then registering for a honeymoon. Looking at their situation, you can understand why they don't want gifts. I mean honestly we all register for gifts because we expect them at our showers and/or weddings. For them that is a huge inconvenience.
