if your house was on fire...what would you take?

Original post by yabbobay

now that these brush fires are less than 5 miles from us...DH and I are just getting our documents together....and hinking about what we would take with us...

we are still optimistic, but they are saying these are the worst fires in 40 years...

so what would you take?
I have my wedding album and other albums
marriage license
passports
birth certificate

if the fire gets closer we are going to take out our hard drives

What would you takes? (hopefully I won't have to pack any of this up...but its good o be prepared...)

Wow, I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. You have a great attitude about it-calm but prepared. Please keep us posted.

you guys are so sweet...our next bridge is 5 am (8 am NY time) when the winds usually change...

Monday night football is moved San Diego was really excited about it...especially since Junior Seau was coming back...

but the fire is near the stadium so it makes sense that they have to move the teams now rather than make a last minute call...

Oh, gosh, Erica...that's so scary. I hope that you and DH remain safe and sound

I have friends in SD area (Vista, Escondido, Pacific Beach); circuits were busy last night. I'm so worried.

In addition to what everyone else suggested you pack, also remember to take stuff for your pets...food, bowl, meds if they need.

Please keep us posted! We'll be thinking of you!!

It was all over the news this morning about the football game being moved.

They showed the homes that were destroyed. It is so sad.

OMG I didn't see this thread til now! I had no idea you were so close to the fires - for some reason I thought this was in Northern CA.

How are things today? Are you both ok? Is Elvis okay too? (probably going stir crazy stuck inside, right?!)

Erica

I hope everything works out. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you but definitely don't leave your Boston behind!! I'm serious, they interviewed one woman who left her 15 show dogs behind and was grateful that her house didn't burn the next day but her neighbors did!! What were you thinking woman!?!? I don't care if I had to run down the street with them like sled dogs. I would never leave my babies behind.

Oh Erica How scary.
I will say that DH was in a fire as a child, and his parents took their children ONLY. They literally had nothing left but their PJs. BUT they were all okay.

If GOD FORBID I had a fire in my home, my baby, Beemer and Scott would be my #1 Priority. Nothing else in the end would matter. BUT I know that I would do my best to grad my teddy bear that I have had since I was 1 years old. It is very important security blanket for me and I would literally not know what to do without it.

Photos, computer, important papers would be next.

If I were you, I would have 2-3 days supply of clothing packed, my wedding album/video, photos, important papers packed in 2 suit cases and ready to go. You will be given notice if you need to leave, but not much. Also, have a few water bottles, your car always full of gas, pet food ready to go.

Re: if your house was on fire...what would you take?

I'm still here...

not sure if its fog or smoke outside...or both...hopefully that wets the ground to prevent any floating embers...We found some poor students school report float down from the sky just hoping our humidity stays up...

John went to work...and I am a little upset about it...the mayor told everyone to stay home...yet they set up a new client yesterday (out of the area) so he has to go in for a few hours....he's only 4 miles away...but there is only ONE road to get there...

as long as the winds stay down - I'll be fine...but our stuff is all packed up (I made DH take a bag to work wih him) but as much as I curse the noise from the Marine base...it definitely saved our house...since they were able to backfire...on the otherside of the base it is completely destroyed (1 or 2 houses in the neighborhood not completely to the ground)

thanks again for thinking of me...it was hard to go to sleep...I tried to stay up as late as possible....but eventually fell asleep...

shamee...the dog leash is ready to go at the front door...and his food and treats are packed up....

I wanted to put the harness on the cat last night before we went to sleep (just in case we had to leave quick...but DH said n\\it wasn't necessary

Re: if your house was on fire...what would you take?

I hope you don't have to take the things you mentioned from your home!

I would take my cat, my photo albums, important documents (which are already in a fire-proof box with a handle) and my two grandmother's rings. Hopefully my e-ring will be on my finger already, but that too.

I hope DH is able to come home soon.

Do you know how close the fires were to Carlsbad? That's where my cousin is and I couldn't get through last night.

Re: if your house was on fire...what would you take?

christine...Carlsbad is very safe...

this event has me definitely thinking about a fire proof safe...we were going to wait until we moved next month...could you imagine?

Re: if your house was on fire...what would you take?

Thanks for the Carlsbad info.

We got to thinking about things after the black out - we are so close to each other here but if we can't communicate or commute - we might as well be in the dark ages (no pun intended).

I bet you won't even be able to get a fire proof safe for a while
