if your house was on fire...what would you take?

Original post by yabbobay

now that these brush fires are less than 5 miles from us...DH and I are just getting our documents together....and hinking about what we would take with us...

we are still optimistic, but they are saying these are the worst fires in 40 years...

so what would you take?
I have my wedding album and other albums
marriage license
passports
birth certificate

if the fire gets closer we are going to take out our hard drives

What would you takes? (hopefully I won't have to pack any of this up...but its good o be prepared...)

Don't know if this has been said or not.. but.

If you have time go take photos of your place. Things you can't take.

Bring your insurance policy with you in case you have to make a claim.

Meds - I know it was said before, but make sure to take them and to also have the phone number to your doctors. Prehaps even call ahead and find who is their backup if need be.

I agree with important legal and financial papers.

Credit cards are fine, but remember to have hard cash. Trying to get through NYC both during 9/11 & The Blackout made me realize the true importance of hard cash.

Since I REALLY freak out and get extra extra prepared, if this were *me* I'd have bottles of water, first aid kit, extra plastic container of gas in the car (bad traffic pile ups), phone charger for the car, toliet paper, towels and basic camping items (knives, cups & such).

Sorry if I sound paranoid but ... well.. hell I wont even explain I freak out cause crap happens to good people.

Good Luck, tell us how it goes.

Usually when your house is on fire, you don't have TIME to take anything with you.

But I would definitely make sure I had my doggie with me.

youre right kmc...but in this case we are sitting here waiting to see if the fire comes towards us...just posted b/c I don' want to forget anything

we may or may not be leaving...they are talking about closing the interstate 1/3 mile from us...if they do..we are going to leave most likely...they mentioned our canyon on the news as a route for the fire...but they said since we have a lot of fire resistant plants that we might be OK...but who knows...this fire is out of control...

Wow!! That's so scarey!!! In that case I would definitely take all the important papers, wedding album or proofs, pets (naturally), and anything else that I considered 'irreplaceable'

Let's hope it doesn't even come down to that for you.

Sending good thoughts your way!!

Aside from important documents and things already mentioned, I'd take all my Teddy Bears, and DH's collection of autographed books.

I might consider moving a few pieces of furniture in advance if it looked real serious - those that have sentimental value - belonged to my grandmothers. Or perhaps just rent a U-haul and have it ready to fill if needed.

pretty crazy pictures!

Erica, how bout an update? I hope you're still safe and home.

I'm watching it on the news - they've estimated 450 houses destroyed and 14 killed. But they didn't give enough details to determine if its moved closer to you...

I'm still here...

the fires came 2 miles from us...and either the winds shifted or the marines put out their fire...and thats our buffer...

we are still packed up and are going to load up the cars before we go to bed...

since we are less than 3 miles from the ocean...we should be ok...{{{{fingers crossed}}}}

the fire has crossed the US Mexico border...and I hope they can stop it...otherwise Tijuana is toast...

thanks for thinking of me...I'll try to keep you guys updated...I'm going stir crazy not being able to leave our place!
