if your house was on fire...what would you take?

now that these brush fires are less than 5 miles from us...DH and I are just getting our documents together....and hinking about what we would take with us...

we are still optimistic, but they are saying these are the worst fires in 40 years...

so what would you take?
I have my wedding album and other albums
marriage license
passports
birth certificate

if the fire gets closer we are going to take out our hard drives

What would you takes? (hopefully I won't have to pack any of this up...but its good o be prepared...)

Photo albums and important papers (insurance info, birth certificates etc and financial records) backup discs for computer, and some irreplaceable stuff from my kids. The rest can all be gotten again.

Erica!!! Only 5 miles from your house???? I will be thinking of you and keeping my fingers crossed that they are able to get the fires under control! Keep us posted!

I will be keeping you in my prayers....

I just don't believe it...but we still have 2 interstates and a marine base btwn us and the fire...so I'm still pretty optimistic...

but we can feel the heat when the wind blows...so I'm just really cleaning right now...i don't know why...but I guess trying to look for things if I need them...

Do you have a firebox? Can you put all your important documents in there. It keeps them relatively safe and all in one spot if you need to get out fast!!!!

In regards to the question... I would take the pictures of when Emma was born and all her videos. Everything else can burn. As long as me and my family were safe.

5 miles??!!?? BE SAFE!!

Re: if your house was on fire...what would you take?

Well, about 3 years ago our neighbor's house was on fire, since we live in a condo, we had to evacuate. I grabbed the dog, took him to the neighbor's. Then went into the house again and started getting the albums of my sister who had passed away. The fireman was yelling but it was all we had of her so I didn't care. Our house was fine.

Looking back, make sure you take you car keys- so you can leave, any medication if you are taking any and maybe some food if you have time. All this was learned after the fact, but my sister knew if from fire drills in college.

It sounds like you and everyone here has covered everything.

Of course I hope you don't have to evacuate.

Stay Safe

wow, thats getting close!

I've got my fingers crossed for you.

If I was fleeing the house in advance of the fire (since you have advance notice, kinda). I would pack up as much as possible - must haves:

important papers (marriage license, birth certificate, passport, checks)
pets
photo albums (more importantly the negatives)
laptop, and any importants disks/CDs
cell phone
purse/wallet
jewelry
clothing
camera
address book/palm pilot
anything else of value (sentimental or $$) you can pack up.
guitar (Al made me write that)
-basically, I would take as much as I can.

I'd also take pictures of your house now, so if there's any damage, you can document before and after.

If the fire came out of nowhere and you had minutes to get out, I would quickly go for the papers (which I should organize into one place), photo album, jewelry, pets, purse, cell phone (not because of its value, but so you can contact people.

For me I would take: our pets, pet food, bottles of water, some clothes, toiletries, money, bank cards, check books, important documents, jewelry, important photo's and albums, some dry foods or snacks, address book, palm pilot, cell phone and charger, and anything of importance.

Be careful if you have to evacuate. I'll be praying that you wont have too.

Keep us informed

Re: if your house was on fire...what would you take?

OK...so our paintings are off the wall...and sitting by the door with photo albums...guitar ( Lisa...that was the first thing John pulled out) and jewelry...

our neighbor just said she put pictures in the car...and has other things packed up...

can you believe that I am still feeling optimistic??? we are about 1/3 mile west of Interstate 805 and the fire chief said their goal is to keep it east of 805...it has reached the marine base already...but I really think that if it gets passed the interstate..that it will be south of us....

they just told us to be prepared and watch the TV...

the scenes of TV looks like a warzone...
