if your house was on fire...what would you take?

Original post by yabbobay

now that these brush fires are less than 5 miles from us...DH and I are just getting our documents together....and hinking about what we would take with us...

we are still optimistic, but they are saying these are the worst fires in 40 years...

so what would you take?
I have my wedding album and other albums
marriage license
passports
birth certificate

if the fire gets closer we are going to take out our hard drives

What would you takes? (hopefully I won't have to pack any of this up...but its good o be prepared...)

OMG -

You are in my thoughts.

I would take my jewlery box and my 'important papers' file. Thats about it .

I dont have any pets yet but I would definantly try and get them out safely, but some things (important docs and my eg ring you can't repalce)

Oh my word Erica, I just saw this and I am happy you are ok. I hope you do not have to leave. You and hubby will be in my thoughts. Keep us informed.

When we had a close call the other day with fire in our home, it made me get on the path to getting a fire proof safe. We have all our negatives and all our albums and pix oh my word.

Take care

I would grab the animals, my metal box with all our important papers (birth certs, banking info, etc.) and picture albums. OH, and my pocketbook!

Yabbo, I hope everything is ok by you! I will be saying a prayer for you!

Glad to hear that your okay.

If my house was on fire the first thing I'd grab is the dog. After that I'd take all the photos I have up and the box I have that keeps the negatives. My jewelry box since my mom's engagement ring is in there as well as an engagement ring which was passed down to me from my MIL which has been in her family for 4 generations.

That's about it. Everything else in this house is replaceable.

so...while the fires are not going to be under control for 5 days...I am 99% sure that we are in a safe area thanks to the US Marines...I will never complain about jet noise again!!!

what I have realized over the last 24 hours is that most of our stuff is replaceable...

what I have learned...

1. take pictures of your house and the items in it... make a list of all of your valuables and their values

2. keep all your receipts...Dh laughs that I do this...but more imporatntly keep them with your insurance policy...receipts mean nothing if they are burned up as well...

3. have all personal documents together - right next to the insurance policy and receipts

4. don't store yearbooks and photo albums in places you cannot get to easily.

5. have a cat carrier...i don't have one...and if we had to go to a shelter with the cat..it would be a mess...I have a harness for her...but I don't think its enough

6. I don't need anything except DH and our pets...we had tons of time to get things together and I didn't even look at the dvds, cds, books, most of my clothes and shoes (although DH did comment a few times that he was upset the TV was too big and heavy to save... )

I feel so lucky right now...it feels almost like a fire drill...that I was able to look at all my mistakes...

wow - that looks like a war zone. So scary - and sad for all those affected True, most everything is replaceable in a house, but how upsetting to have to do so!
