I don't mind when other people speak other languages in front of me. My co-worker is from Ecuador and speaks English very well, but speaks Spanish on the phone and to some of her friends in the office.

I envy that she's bi-ligual and that she can have a private conversation in our office with me here.

Like Erica pointed out, if I go anywhere in the world where English is not the primary language spoken, I will still speak English. It's all I know.



I agree completely. I have a co-worker who speaks English and also speaks Spanish to her family. I also wish I knew other languages. How can you put someone at fault for speaking another language when this entire country was founded by Europeans??? It 'just so happened' that English is what we ended up speaking. We were pretty damn close to speaking French, you know.

When I go to other countries of course I TRY to say a few things in their language, but of course I end up speaking English. I don't think everyone in this country should be FORCED to learn English... after all, it's their problem if they can't get past the language barrier.

And jenny, as for the girl that was on the phone and ringing you up at the same time, that's just RUDE no matter what language she was speaking! That bugs me too!!

Don't you think it's too early for Christmas decorations, etc? I saw in Stacey's post that someone is already selling trees. The dept stores unveil their windows before Thanksgiving!

Don't get me wrong I love Christmas I just don't like it when it's rushed like this!!!
They seem to glaze over Thanksgiving.

Maybe working in the city makes it annoying too, since people come here to visit....

NEXTEL those BAST!ARDs. What the hell? We all grew up.. why do we need to act cool with our grown up walkie talkies? I understand a 'hey, bill you there?' message, but I HATE when people have a full blown conversation on those things.

Even under normal circumstances, most annoying cell phone usage is still only one sided, now we have to hear the WHOLE story on speaker phone?

people that have them dont realize (or are just rude) that you can take the walkie-talkie feature off of speaker!!!!!

Just this past Saturday 2 of my friends and I were in a car together and one of them picked up her nextel to call someone else and told us shhh!! I can't hear her! I was like um, hello, hang up then. I should not talk to a person I'm with so you can talk on a walkie talkie? Get the **** out of here!

I have a NEXTEL and when I am in public I turn the speaker off and you can't hear the beeps.

I can't stand is when I am getting my nails done and the ladies start speaking Chinese and laughing...lol can you say Seinfeld episode

Yesturday: I was at the cafeteria and the register girl was YAPPING in another language on the phone, while ringing my up !!!)
She did not once stop the coversation or put the phone down. Kept talking and in the middle said $1.40, and continued talking. I said are you talking to me? she said Yeah.

a few years ago: I was sick as a dog, and not in the mood. At the laundrymat before I left for vacation and they had the spanish station on the TV. I kindly asked, can we change it to something we can all understand. She said, 'what you don't like spanish'. I said, well, I happend to be part spanish, so no, but last I looked this is america and the laguage of the land, so please change it.' (she did

It doesn't really bother me at all when people speak different languages...If it did I would be a hypocrite, b/c everytime DH and I go to Italy to visit his family, he has to speak English to me.....

If I wait to spain I would try to learn language. I spoke enough to get by in mexico., adn with my parents they held their own in italy.

this I completely agree with...DH will answer his no matter where he is...OK...he has to for work...but then when its not work related he will keep talking!!!! I walk away from him...


Actually it was not even her own phone, it was the company cafeteria phone next to the register. and I said, I think there is a difference between visiting and living.

Sure if you visit, it's understandable that you don't know the language. I would hope for your safety you would learn enough for help, directions, and not too look too touristy.

Well you'll love this.. Jim is Chinese.. so when i get my nails done (he comes with me... he's so great.. not selfconscious at all) they ALWAYS stop.. look at him and ask him 'What are you?'

If they are Vietiamese (sp) or another asian decent then they'll chatter away, but if they're chinese.. I get the SILENT treatment. Makes me wonder what those people really say... hrmmmmm

I mean Jim can bring a whole place to silence or English only.. kinda cracks me up.

Jim speaks Chinese but knows spanish better.
I know spanish but dont speak it well,

For both of us English is our primary language. You'll never hear either of us speak our native tongue.

It's rude. Period. If you KNOW people can't understand you and you're in a different language to get away from having to say something in English you don't want them to hear then it's the same as saying.. 'Psst.. come here I gotta tell you something' then walking off and speaking about me in front of me but off to the side so I can't hear.. That's rude in any language. Having a second language to use as a cover for that doesnt make the action any less rude. My opinion.

I went shopping for a nice suit and Jim was with me.. the lady helping me was Chinese. She figured out I was with Jim and so she starts talking about me to him in Chinese. He KNOWS I hate this, so he said 'Please, speak in English' .... she just goes on in Chinese. Apparently she said I was very much in charge of myself and knew what I wanted, not easily persuaded.. as a compliment of course! and asked how long we dated and do *I* make *HIM* happy!!! THE NERVE!!!

Not cool. that's pissed me off. They come across so cold, barely talking to you, and when they do are so short answered. It's not wonder we think they talk about us. They talk so much to each other.
