Im off to go officially change my name!!

This is soooo super hard for me to do... but it is time...i have only been procrastinating for 81 days now... and now that i have the summer off, i dont have much of an excuse anymore...

OK here we go LEESE.

I have been single for many years and always looked forward to the day when I would be married and change my last name. Why? Because it marks a new stage of my life. It is not a betrayal of my family or my father's name. It doesnt change who I am on the inside one bit. I also doesn't make me less of a professional in my field. If I can adjust, so can people who I have been working with for the past ten years despite the fact that my new last name is a complete and total phonetic atrocity.

A name is a moniker. It does not define your heart, your soul, your passions and your existence. I have held on to my last name for about 10 years longer than I thought I would. My father, had he been alive today, would have told me it was nonsense NOT to take my husband's name. He would have been proud of me and of the new son he acquired. Nothing would have made him more proud than for me to be Mrs. S. Things come full circle. You pass your life lessons down through experience and not by the name on a driver's license or a bank account. At least thats how I see it. May not work for everyone but it works for me!

It's not that bad as long as you do it all at once. I did DMV and SS in less than 10 minutes each. I changed our bank accounts and everything at work as soon as I got back to work.

Still need to do my passport and my smaller credit cards. I did my major credit cards this past week (very easy, one phone call saying I got married and needed to change my last name - no proof needed).

Thanks again for the kind words Leese. I am still changing things over as they come up. The big things SS and DMV I did right away. Then I changed all retirement and insurance stuff at work. I also had to name my DH as my beneficiary to any policies.

Our next steps are:
-Living wills
-Health care proxies

Morbid? Definitely. But recent life experiences dictate a necessity. I dont want to leave my loved ones guessing what I would have wanted.

Yeah, I told DH we should do these and he got all upset and told me we are young and didn't have to think about death. I had to tell him anything could happen and we need to be prepared.

LUCKY!

I was at SS for over two hours this morning!!!! Over course, when it was *finally* my turn, it took like 10 minutes. I was going to go to DMV today also but I'll do it tomorrow instead.

OK... Im back and i did it!! A little less scary then i thought... SS took FOREVER and it was FREEZING inside and smelt really bad!! I made my maiden name my second middle name on my SS card... i just couldnt fully let go of my maiden name... especially since my dad passed away.... the DMV was quick and painless and the bank was a little longer then expected... but the big three are done... now for the small stuff!

anyway, thank you leese for posting Goldi's words... they were very meaniful and hellful!!! It feels strangely good to officially be Mrs. W!!! like it is more real now if that makes any sense...

I'm surprised to hear it took so long at SS, usually that's pretty quick. I still have to do the DMV, I'm dreading the wait on Monday!!!!

i was in and out SOO quick at the DMV in port jeff... .i barely had time to fill my form out!
