DH is puerto rican and I am Irish, we are from different races, but not to my knowledge do we ever get any stares. Just came back from vacation with our friends, he is black and she is white, they did get a few stares, and she confided in me that her family is very upset that she is in a serious relationship with him. They are concerned for their future kids and so on....to me it is crazy that this still goes on....but with the gay weddings question, I thought I would ask, would you have issues if your white daughter was to marry a black man? thanks

What about the other way around? If my Black daughther married a white man (that's a little bit more realistic for me).

Re: interracial weddings
I am a dark skinned Latina and my Fh is white(Irish, Scottish, German).
I have absolutely no problem with inter-racial relationships. How could I? LOL!
But my uncles do. They both wish I were marrying someone not white. My grandmother (whois from Cuba), however, is on the other side. She can't stand blacks or latinos and is very happy I am marrying a white man.

Posted by june262004 Has everyone ever seen American History X. Great MOVIE... Opens a lot of peoples eyes I think.
That's a great movie. I have recommended it to so many people. Plus Edward Norton is so hot..
That movie was scary. I watched with one of my best friends and it was SO graphic. I understand the point it was trying to make, but some of those scenes were gory

Re: interracial weddings
Oh yeah, I don't see anything wrong with interracial dating and marriage. I grew up in Brentwood and my school was filled with interracial couples. It wasn't an issue. I have never dated outside of my race, but then again, I didn't date much before I found my DH, so that doesn't mean anything.
If my future children (male or female) want to marry outside of our race, I wouldn't treat the relationship any differently than a same race relationship. I would feel this way about religion and sexual preference. Who am I to destroy someone's happiness?
I do understand, to a point, though how some parents feel they are protecting their children by telling them not to date someone who is different. For the most part, parents will do anything to keep their children safe. But hate crimes still exist and I think there is the fear that a child might be physically harmed or even killed for following his/her heart. Now some of you may consider it standing up for your beliefs and being willing to die for a cause, but some people dont' want to take the chance is losing the life they created.

So she cant stand 'herself'..obviously black had infiltrated your family tree just by looking at your pictures..until you told me you were latina months ago I thought you were black...
. It saddens me when people dont know their history. Not specifically your grandmother but people in general. For example we have friends who are italian and they had a baby that is similar to an intracial child (black & white). The father wanted to disown the baby but DNA did not lie..after tracing their family trees..they found that he had black blood in this deep rooted italian family and nature is a funny lady..she can bring back certain genes when she is ready

I would have absolutely no problems with my son or daughter being in an interracial or interfaith relationship.I grew up in a predominantly white town, had 2 black people in my class. I was always very friendly with them though, as I did not view their color, I viewed their personalities. There are so many different people in the world, some are good and some are bad, you just have to weed out the bad ones...whether they are white or black or spanish or puerto rican. Its so unfortunate that other races have gotten bad reps just for the color of their skin, not the goodness of their heart.
Nobody is perfect and thats what makes this World we live in, so wonderful.

Re: interracial weddings
personally, if i had a child and this came up, i would say i would be apprehensive b/c marriage is difficult in general and adding those prejudices on top can make life even harder, but i would want to stress that love is so special and if my daughter married a man of another race and they were in love, why would i have a problem? i would be delighted for my child. it is funny b/c my cousins were all told they would be in so much trouble if they dated 'black or spanish boys' and the three girls have! one married a spanish man and had 3 kids and another has been living with a black guy for about a year and half. unfortunatly, these guys were not the pick of the litter, so that has really given their race a bad image. but now with children involved, the feelings have been pushed aside b/c my family knows it can't be an issue anymore. i know that if i brought home a black man, my dad would have be FURIOUS (the family above is his siade) but my mom would have been wary but happy. finding someone good is hard enough in this world. then limiting yourself to a narrow group makes it even harder. damn, i'd rather have a nice, good, hardworking black man than an abusive cheating white man. comes down to the kind of person he is, not the KIND of person he is. make sense? it's funny b/c looking at pictures from the early generations of my husbands family, there is this one sister of my husbands grandfather that you see her and think 'where did she come from?' b/c she looks obviously black among her 5 hungarian siblings, but she is their sister. then you look at the next brother and he looks less 'black' than the girl but more so than the other brothers. then you see the younger kids, and they look all white. so what myas mom said about nature and genes showing up generations later, it is true. my grandmother insists that her father had lebanese blood in him b/c you see pics of my mom and her cousins and they are obviously more than just french, austrian and hungarian. they look very persian. anyway, i started rambling, sorry. point is, life is hard. marrying somene of another race will certainly give a couple obstacles that they wouldn't have had but it is becoming more common. look at interfaith marriages. those of us today have less scrutiny than say marriages between jewish and catholic couples 30 years ago. the stigma has lessened. however, most parents want their children to be happy and if that means marrying someone of another race, then so be it.

Re: interracial weddings
I am in an interracial and interfaith marriage. I am Mex-American grew up in TX and DH is a LI Jewish boy. So obviously, I would not have a problem if my daughter or son dated a black person. Their interaccial relationship would make them stronger as a couple when they are faced with inappropriate comments and stares.
I am going to support my son or daughter's decision to marry who ever they please. Just as long as they believe in God and they treat each other with respect.

Re: interracial weddings
I have never looked at anyone race or religion as a factor in whether or not I should date them. My longest and most meaningful relationship before FH was interracial, and as many of you know, I'm marrying outside my faith. Yeah, you get stares sometimes. but people are ignorant and they have to get used to it. Eventually they will. No matter what you are, people are going to find some way to take issue with it, There are people who hate jews, blacks, whites, catholics, puerto ricans, wiccans, fat people, skinny people, blondes, people who like country music, etc. The point is to be comfortable with WHO you are, and then people teasing you for WHAT you are won't matter.
I understand biracial children can have identity issues, etc, but that's even more racism. they don't act white enough or black enough to fit in with one group or another, but it's just more stereotypes. You just have to rise above it. I absolutely love it when I see interracial couples. it takes a lot of courage to stand up and be who you are and love who you love. When we walk down the street, it's not as easy to see that I'm catholic and FH is Jewish, but we get a lot of criticism, but it's about strength and realizing that it isn't easy to rise above centuries of hatred and misunderstanding.

Re: interracial weddings
It's not only white families that take issue with interracial marriage. I personally could care less and my brother's first wife and current wife (12 years) are both white. However, I know tons of AA families that would flip out if one of their kids brought home a white fiance.
yeah i mean, nothing is worth losing your child over
i mean, i may have views and i may not see eye to eye with the situation, but i'd have to accept it, because it's my child
it would take me a while to come to terms with
its sad how these types of things occur. my fw parents forbid her to see me, so she left. so they havnt talked in 5 yrs.... we been having the time of our life and they will always wonder 'what if'
Religion is another thing that we are suppose to follow... What about being free to doing somthing postive with your life? Isnt this the message that should be conveyed.
Yes, we have gotten stare's and even people yelling at us. In particular black women. Some women see a nice black man (such as myself ) with a white girl and wonder why A. im not with a black girl, or B. how is he not 'a thug'. I know its a sterotype but i believe in it.... To answer the questions A, not many impressed me where i lived and B. i grew up in a good place.
Had i not been raised by good ppl in a good town, i wouldnt of turned out the way i was. I thank my parents for being the best for that.
For all the people that said yes, there would be a problem, im sadden by your choice but just like with my fw parents, its not my problem, its the person that see it as problem. Let them be free and dont hold prejudice anginst a group just cause they dont look like you. Had FW parents meet me, im sure they would of loved me like fw loves me but i was never given a chance. As much as i dont respect that decsion, its there lost at the end.
Sorry if i talked alot or got ppl upset but i wanted to share...after all, this is why we are here.
Don: to some extent, if i read your mind, i understand how you feel. heck i just might feel the same why but it all depends who the person is, where they live and what kind of people are they.
MUAHS for Traci and Tom!!! <3 you guys..........never forget that it is THEIR loss Tom....you are a wonderful guy and I am so happy for you and Traci. You are an amazing couple!!
